Rewatched it today, been at least 10 years. Flawless. Clark Gable as Rhett Butler is genius, some of the funniest deliveries ever. No fricks given.

Then Vivienne Leigh might be the most attractive actress ever using her mental illness to great effect. Hattie McDaniel killin it. Not enough can be said about the movie (and book) and the layers to be analyzed.

Charlie Hamilton, was glad when he died from pneumonia.

Always shudder at the strangled cries of the confederate soldier about to lose his leg, fricking hell, how often thats happened over the course of history.

Highest grossing movie of all-time adjusting for inflation.

Star Wars is #2

What surprised me is Sound of Music is #3.

4. E.T.
5. Titanic
6. Jaws
7. Ten Commandments
8. Doctor Zhivago
9. Exorcist
10. Snow White

This is us.

Gone With The Wind was so far ahead that all the other best picture nominees that year look like they were made in the 20s except for Wizard of Oz.

Stagecoach (which is a classic great film) doesn't look like it was made in the same decade let alone same year.

When I was young (under 10) I think CBS used to show it every year (with intermission and everything) and my mother would make us suffer through it. I hated it and Sound of Music because of forced watching.

Bought it on Blue Ray once it became clear it was headed to Song of the South blacklisting. Watched it and came away with a few impressions:

1) Scarlett O'Hara is probably the greatest villain in cinema history

2) Rhett Butler was a great character

3) I can definitely see how people would think it's racist as frick

As for the cast, I used to hate Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes but then came to realize that he's the perfect cuck - That's why Scarlett chased him because he would have sat in the corner while Big Sam wore out Scarlett until her eyes rolled back in her head.

I wouldn't classify Scarlett as a villain. In fact I consider her the ultimate survivor that is your go-to person in a crisis.

Granted, before the war in the days of the Old South Scarlett was a vain love sick kid who spent a great deal of her life pining for the affections of Ashley Wilkes. We find out what Scarlett really is made of when the war happens and she loses everything. She is willing to do the unthinkable to survive.

I find her an amazing character.

I think this says more about you and your desires than it does about any of the characters.

I like the rape scene where Scarlett wakes up the next morning admitting she just needed a deep dicking to get back in line.

I know it's a classic, but I've never managed to make it all the way though that movie.

Scarlett's manipulative bullshite gets old for me real fast.

Disagree on this, thats part of what I meant in the OP with analysis (of the characters). She's not a bad person, she has a lot of character flaws but she wants to survive. She is capable of doing the wrong thing for the right reason.Vivienne Leigh was able to make us feel sympathy for her. Agree with other poster, amazing character.

Watched them both late last night. Both awesome movies. As is Gone with the Wind. Need to rewatch it when I got time.

Clark Gable is awesome.

It's interesting to see GWTW continue to be considered one of the great classics yet Song of the South won't ever see the light of day unless you are one of the fortunate ones to have a bootleg copy.
