After premiering in 1939 and being in limited release, Gone With the Wind finally had its much-anticipated wide release on this day in 1940.

It broke attendance records everywhere, with almost half the U.S. population seeing it in theaters during its initial release. It has since been re-released in theaters multiple times and is currently the highest grossing film of all-time when adjusted for inflation.

It is estimated that it sold more than 200 million tickets in the United States across all releases.

It's hard to believe that was 80 years ago....

some of those sets/scenes look amazing for 1939

I remember thinking “hell yeah” when I saw it the 1st time. F*ck Scarlett O’Hara and her BS behavior.

Hard to believe Olivia de Haviland (Melanie Wilkes) is still alive

And she was a babe in her day:

She's 104 this year and by all accounts she's still spry and lucid.

Since the first time I saw it as a kid in the 60's, my favorite line is when Big Sam comes to Scarlet's rescue, takes the carriage reins, and says, "Horse, make tracks!"

That’s a good one. Another fav line is when Mamie calls Scarlett and Rhett “mules in horses’ harness”.

Say what you want about Scarlett, but she was the ultimate survivor and one not afraid to make a hard decision in a crisis. Only a man like Rhett Butler could tame that screw.

There are several theaters in the US that never stopped screening it and still do to this day.

Mitchell sold the rights to her book for $50,000 in 1937 (that would be $1 million today).

According to a 2014 Harris Poll, it is the second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible.

I wonder if there’s a film out there that has been seen by more eyes than Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz?

Both 1939 films.

Probably not, unless possibly Citizen Kane?

It's A Wonderful Life perhaps .... because of TV.

If there was a Jeopardy question about that, this would be a good guess.

Because the rights ran out and it ran free on TV for 50 years...so it was played over and over and over again on late night TV .

I adapt "I don't know nothin' about birthing no babies" whenever I am near one needing a diaper change.
