What are the must see artsy fartsy movies?

I know David Lynch and Tarkovsky. Watched The Lighthouse the other night. I’d put Mandy in the category as well.

What else should I check out?

Hunt for the Wilderpeople was fantastic, but that’s the most ‘artsy fartsy’ I get and I don’t know if that fully satisfies what you’re looking for.

Either way, should still check it out if you haven’t seen it. Great stuff.

Holy Motors is ridiculous and absurd. It's the stereotypical art movie. Let's see, what else? Lust in the dust, a John Waters movie is pretty fun to watch. And speaking of John Waters, there's always Pink Flamingos.

Anyway, you did good with this OP. Those are just sorta off the top of my head.

Donnie Darko is pretty damn weird.

Big name cast for such a strange film.

Awesome soundtrack too.

Also Pi (1998) very weird but good.

Oh here's another.

The bad batch. Keanu Reeves and that Jason Momo or whatever his name is. Alot of fun to watch.

Not sure if independent but I throw in Two-Lane Blacktop Starring James Taylor and Dennis Wilson. It’s pretty artsy fartsy in a 1971 kind of way.

it's pretty boring aside from Warren Oates, who is great

neither Taylor nor Dennis can act

way too much energy. if you want "art house" then go watch Panos Cosmatos's other movie (beyond the black rainbow)

here are some others

The Princess and the Warrior
Le Samourai
The Seventh Seal
Stalker
Solaris

i haven't thought about this in a long time b/c most art house movies make me want to hurt myself.

Very true. And I don’t think it was an independent film either but it feels like one.

After some pondering I think Repo Man was a good independent film.
Also liked Liquid Sky. Though it’s really weird the concept was good.
