Iconic comedian Gilbert Gottfried has died at the age of 67 after suffering “a long illness.”

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” his family announced in a statement on social media Tuesday. “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.

“Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love, the Gottfried family.”

I grew up watching Gottfried and Rhonda Shear on Up All Night. I believe Gottfried hosted Friday nights and Shear had Saturdays.

This sucks. Back when I moved out here he had a show at the hotel I worked at. I would go up to the employee dining room and he’d be up there eating and a few times I sat with him and shot the shite. Good dude.

He was on Joe Rogan a few months back and it sounded like something was wrong with him. He sounded ill. Very sad.

He was on so many TV shows, and had so many small parts, like Bevely Hills Cop II, I get confused thinking about them. I was confusing BHCII with a Lethal Weapon movie. I remember him on Night Court, doing voices on Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead. He made the rounds. Probably made a little money too. Like his Sidney Bernstein character in BHCII, he may still have money from when he was hot. I liked him in most of the stuff he did. Thought he was younger than me, but he was older.

Did his voice sound the same? I've always wondered if that was his regular voice.

No, and it was weird to me to see him not in character.

no, his normal voice was very quiet and subdued

YT used to have a phone message he left for Stern in his normal voice, though I don't know if it's still there

ETA: This pic from the late '80s hints at something other that than the creepy nerd persona he created and carefully cultivated

I wish he’d narrated the entire 50 Shades before passing. Funniest shite is ever heard in a long time first time I heard it.

He was super close with Norm and Bob too. That's tragic all 3 go one after the other.

He lost a large contract with AFLAC because of a joke about the Tsunami in Japan.
