I wonder if the Night King’s underling White Walkers are “smart” enough to lead a large group into a major battle where they could split the force and attack in two places at once or if the King has to be in a relatively close proximity to direct actions. Giants attacking one area and the Night King and the dragon torching kings landing or something.

They still have the basic outline of who lives/who dies and what’s supposed to happen in the end. Everything that happened in S6 and S7 will happen in the books as well, just not as it was told by the show.
