Has it been discussed yet how so many characters (Samwell, Brienne, etc.) survived dogpiles of wights / other unsurvivable situations?

My best guess is plot armour also the scene last maybe a couple minutes since the back half was slowed down.

This was by far, not even close the worse episode of the show.
The writing has gone way down hill since leaving the books behind and the twist from the book to what is going to happen in the show was not a good idea.
See the making of the episode. Arya would have been killed by the Night Knight very easily.
The sword arc taken out of the show was not a good idea, as you saw fire could not effect him of just valyrian steel sword would not have, which is why the need to remake the legendary sword.
This all took away from the need of Gendry and the Melisandre long arc stories.
The pushed last season to fast and went on high speed to rap it up, when it was HBO's cash cow. Yes early they cut the story arc of Lady Stoneheart, this was to cut budget, but should have been left in as they made Arya more powerful by putting elements of that arc to her character. The new twist does not work in the story and took away from the larger arc of Fire (Danny) and Ice (Jon).
The sad twist at the end has been totally down played with this episode.

I'm rolling with the "Bran = LoL" theory until it's proven wrong. Makes sense of everything that went down during the battle and how bran was orchestrating the trap

What Bran did isn’t important. What’s important now is whether the white people of Winterfell (whoever is left) accept Grey Worm and Missandei even though they are brown.

Does that make Sansa Trump?
