Quite old at the time this happened. It would still be a big change in his character to let Ned take the child.

I think at this point crackpotting has become the "cool" thing to do so people will disreguard all common sense adn prior character development just to come up with a new controversial theory
Any theory that has Ned throwing away his honor and cheating on Cat, would
1.) completely eliminate the point of who Jon Snows parents are,
2.) not really make any sense as far as we know ned, and
3.) have extremely insignificant repercussions to the story

Well then they mad an error in season 4 by stating him as there.

What would his age be? The only think I can find date wise is that he became Lord Commander in 259 and died 283. info link But I can't find any related dates to find his age.
