When you watch these shows, don't you wonder why certain characters are there? Why the hell is Jon a bastard? We know Gendry's role. But what's Jon's role? You must suck at chess.
Of course I wonder why they're there. And I try to think about things like that. But there is a huge difference between wondering and straight up putting together theories that connect dots that aren't even really there.
Herein lies the crux of what I'm talking about:
quote:
The look made me think there's something up. The "pedigree" comment in the NYT made me think Robert and Lyanna.
That's what I'm talking about...based on the show, you never made that connection, yet you read an outside article that makes you sniff out extra things. I'd bet money that article was written with other knowledge.
And it's not even that it's a big deal at this point, because we know something is up with Jon Snow, and so that can't be unseen. But the point is that these "theories" came from outside sources, and that's what sucks.
And your chess analogy is laughable. I'm not great at chess, but I'm okay...it's just not a game I got into much as a kid. But that doesn't mean that I lack foresight or deduction. But I could flip that around on you and say that you aren't very good at chess either unless you have someone who is good sitting next to you telling you what moves to make. That's the analogy to you and your NYT article IMO.

The Rhaegar Targeryen connection was completely out of left field from a poster in this thread.
This is the problem we are talking about.

Really? I don't remember that. I remember her saying that she would just love Jon and treat him as one of her own.

Ned wouldn't just name his bastard a Stark because he raised him with his family. He's named Snow to recognize that he is a high born bastard and even getting that name is rare. You know why Gendry only had a first name? Because Robert didn't recognize him.
Bastards are named based on where they were born though. When Jon first got to CB, he and Sam talked about that. Thus, Jon's last name is Snow because he was in the north. Same reason Ramsay's last name was Snow.

I'm on the side of definitely saying that Jon is Lyanna's child, I just don't know who the father is yet. I'm thinking Rhaegar for a true heir to the throne before the Baratheon takeover. Jon's heirarchy would take over Stannis's, thus making the red witch nervous and hence, "the stare." Boom!
You just "Boom!"'d something that has been talked about for about 25 pages now.

So we're stupid because we can't put 2 and 2 together, yet the question is coming from a completely different book (pun half intended).

You're in the right here for sure. No one "came up" with the theory without knowing about Roberts rebellion in some fashion, which isn't given much detail in the show (it should've). Anyone that's "deduced" that from the show is lying IMO, atleast I've been honest about what I know

Well ok then. I don't know, I was under the impression that Jon was lucky to have the Snow surname and before Ramsay getting his Bolton papers (which was a very special circumstance), bastards were not allowed to represent the House. Like Jon would never be able to inherit Winterfell. Is that right?

On that note though, I do love going back and watching scenes from the show. Watching them by themselves helps pick up things that you might've missed when the show was airing (because so much is going on). I started going back and watching clips a while back..maybe during season two-ish..because I had missed some obvious shite on the show and looked like an idiot in the thread.
Youtube has an amazing number of scenes from the show...you could piece together full shows clip by clip if you had the time.
About to watch Oberyn fight the Mountain as I type this.

I dunno. I've always been unsure of how exactly all that works
Like i just assumed that bastards had no claim, but then Joffery went and killed all the bastards of Robert to make sure he didn't have anyone with a claim to the throne so I guess in certain circumstances a bastard can have claim but I'm not sure how that works.

That sounds cruel
I plan on watching GoTs from the beginning but only going one episode a week to stretch it out til next year. It took me a month to binge watch it all to catch up to right when the current season started
