I've read them. The first one is well worth your time, the second pretty much blows except it gives a great background on the Targ history, and their rebellions. The third was much better than the second, but not quite as good as the first.
You can find them on the internet if you are really serious about reading them.

I don't have a link but I remember reading an interview with Martin where he was asked if the Golden Company would ever enter the actual story and he mentioned the old theater adage about Chekhov's gun. (If there is a gun above the mantle in Act 1 it will be fired by Act 3.) So all that history about the Great Bastards is gonna work its way into the main story. There can be a fine line between speculation and spoilers so I'm gonna treat this like a spoiler.
SPOILER:
Daemon Blackfyre was killed by Bloodraven's archers at the Redgrass Fields but his body was recovered by Bittersteel. It's safe to assume that Bittersteel wouldn't have left the sword of Aegon the Conqueror on the battlefield so it probably traveled across the Narrow Sea and is presumably in the possession of the GC. The other Targaryen sword, Dark Sister, carried by Aegon's sister Visenya, and later by Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, was last known to be in the possession of Bloodraven. Since Bloodraven later fell from favor and was sent to the wall, Dark Sister would seem to be either hidden somewhere at the wall or in the Red Keep. When GRRM mentions a seemingly insignificant detail more than once its not so insignificant; so what's hidden in those tapestries Littlefinger asked Cersei to send to him at the Eyrie?

SPOILER:
I have read a couple things that the Free Cities will play a bigger role and that there will be a POV from there. It might be one of the Hands that were exiled before Robert's rebellion and he might be with the Golden Company.

I wont hold it to Bantam and GRRM to meet the date, every other date has been pushed back thus far.
Also, I wanted to drop some thoughts on the Golden Company discussion from the above few posts.
Spoilers:
Please excuse all the spellings, it has been forever since I typed out any of these names.
We did indeed learn of Blackfyres fall, and his son's deaths as well. Bittersteel did indeed cross the ocean with the sword. And the Golden Company has always been rumored with Targaryen's.
Not only this, but Oberyn Martell in Dorne sent his son to meet up with Daenrys, since he is siding with her. He initially wanted his daughter to marry Daenrys' brother Vicerys but he got himself killed. Long story short it is hinted Oberyn's son has met up with the Golden Company to seek her out.
Another hint is Tyrion meets up with some mercenaries who mention the name young Griff and Griff. This is theorized to be related to Griffin, which is the house symbol of Rhaegar's best friend when Rhaegar was alive. He was exiled himself across the seas. So long story short, it is believed Rhaegar's friend is with the Golden Company along with Martell's son and they are going to present the sword to Daenrys before they return across the ocean for conquest.

LOVED the first book...and I usually hate Fantasy books...
But it just got to whacked out and weird for me when the jailbait chick gave birth to and started breast feeding dragons...
kinda lost me after that...tried the second book..but it got too far out there

quote:this one seems different from the way GRRM is talking ab it and the confirmations from the publishers. Still, it's almost hard to believe

Book 3: Storm of Swords
Book 4: Feast for Crows
