You guys have hyped the frick out of Arthur Dayne, who is mentioned in like one sentence out of five books. Does he get mentioned after Game of Thrones and I just forgot? I read most of those books like 8 years ago.

Ned, Jaime, and Barristan have thought of him quite a few times, and they themselves all think they look like a bunch of pussies next to him.

No, it's basically them basing it off of the fact that everyone in the books talks him up. It's like when old ppl argue that basketball players from 30 yrs ago would dominate everyone today, nobody really knows, and everyone always overhypes the guy not competing anymore

It's like this, except everyone knows Michael Jordan is the GOAT.

But everyone's seen Michael Jordan play. Even through the books none of us have seen Dayne fight, we've just heard stories that I'm sure get talked up over the years. Of course Selmy is going to be obsessed with him, he wanted to be him, Ned Stark was involved with killing him so you know he's going to talk about how amazing he was, that's Ned's way. But none of us really "know". We've seen Jaimie, Selmy, the Clegane's, ect... I mean shite if Dayne was so amazing why did Robert sit on the Iron Throne? It's all reputation, I'm not saying he isn't one of the best, but I'm not ready to say he'd easily beat all these guys just because people talk him up in legends and history

need to make my picks
quote:

ROUND 1
(1) Arthur Dayne v (16) Knight of the Laughing Tree (this ones kind of a lore vs. lore

(8) Khal Drogo v (9) Qhorin Halfhand (Drogo too fast)

(5) Gerold Hightower v (12) Arys Oakheart

(4) Ned Stark v (13) Magnar of Thenn (Jon could beat Tyr IMO)

(6) Blackfish Tully v (11) Brienne( the Blackfish is tough, but I dk, this was a hard one

(3) Barristan Selmy v (14) Tormund Giantsbane

(7) Sandor Clegane v (10) Greatjon Umber

(2) Gregor Clegane v (15) Wun Wun (LOL)

(1) Jaime Lannister v (16) Boros Blount

(8) Strong Belwas v (9) Victarion Greyjoy

(5) Areo Hotah v (12) Mance Rayder (Hotah is a dark horse in this)

(4) Rhaegar Targaryen v (13) Darkstar

(6) Bronn v (11) Beric Dondarrion

(3) Red Viper v (14) Syrio Forel

(7) Loras Tyrell v (10) Dragonknight

(2) Robert Baratheon v (15) Euron Greyjoy (maybe the easiest fight of the tourney)

No, it's not really like that at all. Basketball players from 30 years ago didn't play against the current superstars. It would be like Lebron, Kobe and Wade saying that they played against/with a guy from the past, and then saying he was the GOAT. It's not just anybody saying Dayne was a bad mofo, it's some of the greatest warriors alive in Westeros.

If Dayne was really so much better than all of them, he'd still be alive, I'm just saying...

I'm not saying he's not great, but he's so popular because he took an interest in the common folk, paying for what his troops took and destroyed. Also he beat the Kingswood Brotherhood outlaws and killed the Smiling knight, who by all accounts was insane and kind of like The Mountain...

So you take care of the people below you, and rid the world of some evil outlaws and a guy everyone hates, people are going to like you. He also lost to Rhaegar TWICE in tournaments, who is a 4 seed in this tourney. And apparently he was stopped thanks to Howland Reed, who isn't even in the top 32...And I know he was out numbered, the war was lost already, ect ect... But still

When badasses think you are a badass, you get some props.

But you know what's wrong with this matchup....the truly unsung hero?

Howland Reed.

Dude would cut up three quarters of the list.

Unless you are counting him as the Knight of the Laughing Tree.

And? We don't really know exactly how he died, but seems to me like he died in battle, poison wouldn't help a ton there, unless it's super fast acting.

Look like I said, I'm not saying he isn't one of the best, I'm not even saying he shouldn't be the one seed. I'm just saying everyone thinks he's so amazing because people talk him up bc he was a truly great man and very honorable, but we don't really know, and there were people before him, and people after him, who have more impressive resume's

So the opinion of Ned Stark, Barristan Selmy and Jaime Lannister doesn't matter? It wasn't exactly a fair fight at the tower.

I'm not sure the outcome of jousting tournament against the Prince of a lunatic king would matter in a sword fight. Loras Tyrell won the joust in GoT, but I don't think many believe he would defeat Jaime or Sandor in single combat with swords. It is even said in the books that Garlan is much better with swords than Loras.

Negative. It was at best, 7 against 3. From what we read, it is Ned Stark, Howland Reed, and I think a Dustin that he faces and almost defeats. None of these guys were pulling off 10 vs. 1 bullshite like in the movies. The Dragonknight, way underrated on here, was killed by two brothers while he was defending the king. Sandor Clegane was ultimately "killed" by 3 ordinary lackeys of his brother. Jamie Lannister was captured after being overwhelmed. He only managed to kill two of his captors. Neither of which were anything special.

Jousting is not single combat. Robert couldn't joust worth a shite, but was one of the biggest badasses in the history of the realm.

And I stand by my previous post. I think all of these guys would be in big trouble if Daemon Blackfyre would have rolled up on them.

The dude probably wouldn't last enough. He died of a titty cut. The weaponry and armor of Westeros would probably make short work of him imo.

I was under the assumption proper non-blood magic healthcare would be provided.

That aside, depending on the length of the tourney, Drogo could win the entire thing and die after he claims victory over everyone.

ETA: My pun was overlooked as well.

I didn't say they didn't matter, but guys talkign fondly of a past hero doesn't immediately make me think Dayne is the greatest fighter in the history of ever...

True enough, but they were 3 members of the Kingsguard, I'm not saying 7 vs. 3 is fair, but there's tails of people being outnumbered worse and winning. (I do think Dayne was the best fighter in the Tower no doubt)

That's a fair point, but what does Rhaegars dad have to do with it?

It has been suggested that Dayne let Rhaegar win the tournament, though HIS reasons probably wouldn't have included fear of the Mad King.

Selmy chooses his words carefully when discussing Rhaegar to Dany. I honestly think Selmy believes Rhaegar was a fine warrior, but that there were a number of knights who were better.
