I'm not sure why HBO never had this miniseries available on their streaming service until now, but it finally up. It is excellent.

You also see early Bryan Cranston as Buzz Aldrin.

Just finished watching it. Very good

Liked how each show had a different POV to see the what it took to get us to the moon.

It actually set the template:

Apollo 13 (feature) -> From the Earth to the Moon

SPR (feature) -> Band of Brothers

FTETTM is every bit as good as BoB. There. I said it.

I bought the DVD set years ago and have watched it about a half dozen times, the last being about two years ago. This makes me want to dust it off and watch it again.

Is it in full 1080p HD or are there vertical bars on the edges of the screen?

It's full screen.

This is my first time watching it. We didn't have HBO pre-Sopranos, so I didn't see this series on a square tube TV like you guys did.

Not trying to be a dick, but, while it's really enjoyable, it doesn't come close to Apollo 13 or First Man when it comes to visuals or casting. It has a very TV movie feel to it. (I know that HBO is TV, but their output is usually a bit more cinematic).

We're still enjoying it, but I was expecting something a bit more epic. It doesn't hold up to Apollo 13 as Band of Brothers did to Saving Private Ryan.

were there any tv miniseries/movies that were produced on a cinematic level back in the 90s? I'm trying to think but I can't remember any examples to take a look at. BoB wasn't too long after, but I'm not sure how fast the tech advanced in that 3 year period of time.

I don't know. I was still watching on tube TVs at that time, so it's hard to tell. This series looks clean as hell now, but the lighting on the spacecraft and astronauts in space has a very sci-fi feel to it, more than a realistic feel. Which is a pretty cool effect, but it makes the series more fun than gritty and realistic.

You have to remember that From the Earth to the Moon was sort of a prelude to what has been called the "Golden Age of Television." The miniseries premiered on HBO about two months before Sex in the City and eight months before The Sopranos.

I many ways, From the Earth to the Moon was something of a harbinger of things to come. And if you think the casting of First Man is better than the cast in From the Earth to the Moon than I'm afraid I can't help you.

We finally powered through to the end of the series.

It was very up and down for us. Oddly enough my favorite episode was probably the geology trip of Apollo 15. But then David Clennon elevates everything that he's in. I thought it was nice that in both The Right Stuff and this series, the astronauts make a difference in the program by quoting Clennon's character. ("No bucks, no Buck Rogers" in The Right Stuff, "Grandeur" in From the Earth to the Moon.) They skipped over the trouble that the 15 crew got into for their side businesses that they'd set up to make some money off of their trip.

I know why they glossed over Apollo 13 and used that trip to center on the reporters, but, man, that sticks out watching it decades later.

It's a good series. I wish we had been able to watch it in the 90's so that we'd have enjoyed it for what it was then, and would have some nostalgia attached to it now.

So...I actually purchased the Blu ray release and see what you are saying about the visuals. Here's the thing though....those aren't the original computer effects. I have the DVD version and the Blu ray version and the visual effects from the DVD version are superior. FAR superior.

The same visual effects company that worked on Apollo 13 did the effects for From the Earth to the Moon. When you watch the original DVD release you can tell as the visual effects for the two products look very similar. They apparently re-did the effects for the HBO Now/Blu ray release because the original effects were not done in HD for whatever reason.

Whoever redid the visual effects for this release should be fired because they did a really shitty job with it.
