Wow, what a just great movie. Maybe the best "ensemble" cast from last year imo, in terms of the actual performances. Between Foxcatcher and Birdman for sure. I didn't even realize that was Mark Ruffalo until mid-way through. Tatum did a fantastic job in his best serious role since The Eagle (I forgot about that other movie he was in with the crazy bitch gf, but this was still better). Carrel showed that he has some serious chops, though there were definitely shades of Michael Scott that peaked through on occasion. I won't spoil it for anyone, but it is a very sad movie and the ending left me with such an empty feeling, but not a disappointing one.

One of my favorite sports movies ever- using sports as a backdrop for a serious tangental story is a great idea, like in the movie Moneyball. I thought they did an awesome job of portraying the brutality of wrestlling. Also, I read a review before watching it that nailed the pacing of the movie, the author said the whole movie is crafter like a slow-motion wrestling match, with each character clashing, grappling, and struggling for position throughout the duration.

At the moment this is my top 5 movies list for 2014 looks liek htis, in no particular order:

Foxcatcher
Birdman
Edge of Tomorrow
Nightcrawler
Gone Girl

Movies I saw last year which didn't make the list in order from best to least favored:

X-Men: DotFP
Interstellar
22 Jump Street
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Grand Budapest Hotel
The Babadook

Still need to see:

The Imitation Game
Whiplash
Captain America: WInter Soldier
American Sniper
A Most Violent Year
Chef
CitizenFour

There are a few movies that were critically acclaimed but I don't plan on seeing- Selma and The Theory of everything come to mind.

Any suggestions on which of these I should queu up next? Struggling to pick between Whiplash, The Imitation Game, and a Most Violent Year.

Any suggestions not listed? Any suggestion to skip altogether?

Imitation Game is really good until the last few minutes of the movie when it decides to become a 'message' movie. Winter Soldier is really good as well if you turn your brain off for parts of it.

Foxcatcher's use of time kept throwing me off. And the real Mark Schultz can't stand the movie.

It looks like he's since come around to the movie. I really didn't pick up on the possibility of Mark and John having any kind of carnal relationship, although I did suspect Du Pont may have had some desire while Mark was simply an athlete who is extremely comfortable with his body.

I'm not sure what you mean by use of time, did they jump back and forth at parts? Or was it just because they would skip ahead months at a time?

The tension throughout the movie kind of made me forget about how long it was, didn't really think it was slow as much as I kept worrying about the time running up while the story was still unresolved. I didn't know how it was going to end so that was pretty shocking for me.

ETA: I could see not liking it if you watched it with a girlfriend or someone impatient, but thought it was an excellent watch by myself.

Carell was a trip in this. After watching, I checked if DuPont's self-aggrandizing infomercial portrayed in the film was out there.

Yup

It was boring and then glossed over the actual meat of the story

Whiplash>>Foxcatcher..however, I did know the story before I saw the movie and therefore had very high expectations of it. The pace didn't bother me as I thought the dramatic effect was spot on. Carrell was ok, but I thought a lot of actors could have played that role effectively as his affect was often so flat throughout most of the movie that it made his role fairly simple.

Such a hard movie to gauge.

Acting was superb.

Some intense moments and obvious wtf moments.

Left wondering what the point of the whole thing was.

Probably best review I can make is: I didn't like it but I respected it.

Spoiler for anyone who lived under a rock in the mid nineties or never heard of the DuPont family or the Schultz's

Like there was an unmentioned eight year jump from Mark leaving until when he killed his brother. Movie didn't give a time. The murder was in 1996, Mark left in 1988.

And the real Mark Schultz can't stand the movie.

Channing looked like a retarded caveman walking around so its not surprising he would have a problem with that. Still thought the movie was great.
