Films Opening Overseas Before the USA

I understand if studios want to open Bond in the UK before the rest of the world but for films like Iron Man and Star Trek, it is idiotic to release them after. JJ went out of the way to keep the film secret but all of the spoilers will be out by the time it comes to America. Why don't they just release them at the same time world wide?

It's stupid. We are the largest film market in the world. JJ went through great lengths to keep the villain of the new Star Trek movies under wraps, I expect it to be spoiled for everyone before they see the movie.
Makes no sense.

Not only that, but I think it would make more sense to release them in the USA first anyway.
Bad reviews tend to turn people off of movies in the USA a bit more fiercely than they do overseas.

Iron Man is an American hero too yet Europe sees it first.
Star Wars better release here first.

well the good news with this is, I just found a decent stream of the new Iron Man, going to go to sleep to it now.

This strategy fricked Battleship's domestic box office. Release in Europe 3 weeks before US release. Did very well there, but was overwhelmed by Avengers in the US.

I would actually love to hear an explanation for why they do this.
They should release WW all at the same time.

In terms of revenue the US is. India and Hong Kong (in that order) produce more films and have a larger film "industry".

Iron Man 3 was good, but not as good as I expected. Glad I watched it for free. The bad thing was I stayed up until almost 3 watching it, so I am dragging today.

RDJ told Leno this is probably going to be the last Iron Man based on what happens in the movie.
I wanted to see him play the alcoholic Stark.

because blockbuster movies make most of their money overseas
compare the overseas % vs the domestic %

Then why not release it the same time world wide? If Europe makes more, I doubt they won't make the same amount if they open the same time.

I'm sure they have their reasons. The strategy saves/makes them money somehow. Logistics maybe? Something to do with marketing?

I think overseas pirating is a bigger problem due to bootleg DVDs being a bigger deal overseas.
Why they don't open all the same time I'm not sure. I'd guess its tricky to coordinate the timing of getting a good opening weekend date in the US, still having to get the actual film to overseas markets and avoiding bootlegging the movie.

It only encourages bootlegging as Naploeon can attest to.

I don't see how that works in their favor.
