This is a weird phenomenon, did it start with The Drew Carey show and the Jamie Foxx show? At least The Jamie Fox store was loosely based on his own life.
I always thought it was weird to have a fake show with a real person in it playing a fake version of them self, that being said there are lots of funny shows that do it so maybe it isn’t so weird. Why does this happen so much with comedies? It’s just easier to play a fake version of yourself?

Discuss

ETA: my wording was bad, it obviously didn’t start with Drew Carey and Jamie Foxx there are a ton of earlier examples. For some reason I thought those shows were earlier than they were and I didn’t even think about the shoes from before the 80’s

No. Just off the top of my head there was The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Bob Newhart Show.

Leave it to Beaver.

If you count his nickname.

EDIT:

Whoops, sorry. Wasn’t paying attention. You meant the ACTOR’s name in the title.

The Cosby Show- with Bill Cosby of course
Martin- with Martin Lawrence

Netflix had like one season before it was cancelled of
Marlon- starring Marlon Wayans.

Bad example - the character's name was also Lucy.

Gary Shandling did It's Gary Shandling's Show (86-90) then did The Larry Sanders Show (92-98), which were both autobiographical in nature with the second adopting a similar name to his own. Weird but Larry Sanders was hilarious. Hank was the best. Hey Now.....
