I disagree. The reason Ferris is fondly remembered as much or more than other Hughes films is it felt more “real” due to shooting the scenes in historic Chicago venues. That is what made it stand out. It wasn’t the actors it was the places they went to.
The other Hughes films didn’t have that and were quite generic.

Anthony Michael Hall could have played Ferris and been good in it. He was great playing the geek in Sixteen Candles
But I think Broderick obviously played the role perfect being able to show he’s in control of all situations but never coming of as arrogant. I think there was an arrogance/nastiness in Hall, where as Ferris is far more likeable

Didn't that cause a big rift between them? I can't remember if it was Ferris or a different role, but Hughes wrote it with AMH in mind for the role. When he said no, it upset Hughes to the point that he never offered him another role and I think they never spoke again.

I saw an interview with Hall this year where he was asked about this. Said there was indeed a riff as Hall wanted to move onto different things and Hughes wanted to continue to build around him. But he also said that many years later Hughes was hanging out with John Candy and they called him out of the blue and spent several hours reminiscing over the phone about the good ol days. Hall said he was grateful they had that moment as both Candy and Hughes died young.
