Kurt Busch level maybe? Win a few races each year; compete for a title here and there.

Toi many other drivers in equipment as good and with more talent (Gordon, Johnson, Stewart) in the same timeframe as his peak years.

People now mostly remember DW as the semi-goofy announcer, but he was magic on a short track. Won seven consecutive races at Bristol.

Yeah I know ole DW is up there in age now, it’s been a while since I watched NASCAR regularly and he was still in the booth with lots of energy the last time I saw him. It was just striking how much he had changed since the last time I saw him.

There wasn't much in the first two that I hadn't heard in some capacity before. The footage was great though, and man is DW old now. Dale wasn't a great dad or husband in his early years, and as they said he was racing the ghost of his dad. The saddest thing is I think he was trying to make up for that later on and his life was cut short before he could fully make amends.

I just watched the first two episodes, and I agree, there wasn't a ton of groundbreaking stuff I learned, but still well worth the watch for NASCAR fans and non-fans.

The most fascinating "new" footage to me was the affection and pride he showed for his daughter with Theresa. You could tell he was totally invested in being a better father than he had been to Kerry, Kelley, and Dale Jr.

DE was hated until he became an old man

There were legions of Earnhardt fans for almost his entire career. He sold more merchandise than anyone else.

He kept winning ‘Most popular driver’ when the voting was via telephone and his fan club would stuff the box.

Not really. 3 of his kids are pretty much waiting for his widow to die. That says a lot about him too. The way Jr talks about his sister, she was more of parent than Dale was to him.

My dad loved DE.

I'll watch it in memory of them both

I watched both episodes on Monday. I can't wait for the last two to come out.

Like what has been said here, a lot of this information had been covered before. I've heard a lot of these stories already, but there have been things that they went deeper on that was interesting.

I will always watch a good NASCAR doc about "the old days". This one seems really well done.

I was a JR fan growing up and I really feel sorry that he doesn't have access to the things that might make him feel closer to SR. Just some of the memorabilia would be awesome to see. I'll never understand the Theresa stuff. How insecure must you be to run that race team into the ground and shut out SR's kids? We may never get the full truth from anyone involved. She's only 66 so we may have to wait a very long time to see what is left over

ETA: Also I wonder had SR not died if Hendrick would be what it is today. That's some revisionist history that I enjoy thinking about.

I also was thinking about how Kerry (I think?) told JR on the podcast that he couldn't even use his own name for his company due to Theresa. It's crazy

To say that any of this makes Earnhardt a ‘total failure in life outside of racing’ makes no sense under any standard.

Jr. is worth hundreds of millions, has a smoking hot wife, kids, and a media empire. I would say that whatever Sr. did worked out pretty well for Jr.

Seems like a nice guy. Was raised by a stepfather who was sorta tossed to the side once Kerry discovered that he was an Earnhardt. A lesson to any of you considering raising other men’s children

Kerry is a better man than Dale. When Kerry's first marriage fell apart, Kerry fought and got custody on his kids because of what his dad did to him.

Have you listened to Kerry talk about Sr.? You seem more mad about the situation than Kerry is.

Uh yeah, what I said is pretty much paraphrased from interviews he gave about why he fought so hard to get custody of his kids. I’m not mad about the situation, just discussing it on a message board. Why are you so sensitive about the subject?

I never liked him, but he had a period of about 8-10 years that he dominated.

The last two episodes were better than the first two. Man, having a girl myself, my heart breaks for Kelley. That was tough to watch her interviews.

Makes sense these were better, a lot more footage and info from this era.
