For Perspective, No Country for Old Men scored a 91

I feel like "lack of character development" is the standard excuse that unsophisticated movie-goers use to criticize a film to seem smart when they don't realize that not all films are "character" films.

It's hard to care about a movie if the characters are bad. I'm not saying they have to be incredibly deep or complex, but if they're so bland that you don't care if they live or die, that's a problem (Rouge One).

He used actual aircraft instead of CGI which is such an awesome move. CGI aircraft tend to ruin flicks for me because they perform like arcade video games.
The trade-off is the German 109's are postwar Spanish models so not technically historically accurate but close enough. Same ones that were used in Battle of Britain film.

It isn't what you think.
Without getting into what some would consider spoilers, it all takes place during the battle of Dunkirk, but the 3 interconnecting stories take place over different lengths of time.

The characters aren't bad. They just take a back seat to the event that is taking place around them. I saw Dunkirk at a special screening. It's almost as if Nolan wanted you to feel like you were a time traveler who had gone back to 1940 to witness the evacuation. He makes you feel like you are watching real men who were actually there on the beaches, on the sea, and in the air.
In a real-life situation, you aren't going to get any Hollywood cliches about where a soldier was from, who is waiting for them back home, and what job in the civilian world they're going to try for when the war is over.

Yea, Nolan said he wanted it to be like a virtual reality experience, and by the reviews it sounds like he achieved that
