I love both 1 and 2 equally and have watched them countless times.
Over the last few months, I have watched The Godfather Epic on HBO 3 times. I love viewing it in chronological order. I highly recommend it to any fan, as long as they aren't a complete purist

Yeah, Duval's character was great but was an enigma to me. He seemed like a good human being who was able to compartmentalize things. It was a fascinating read on a mob lawyer. Of course, he has been good in pretty much everything he has been in.

Damn that movie was great. Anyone else think Duvall stole the show?
Tom Hagen is a great character. Loyal as a dog but is always kind of looked down on because he is not Sicilian.
Great, Great character and perfectly acted by Duval.
Pacino, Caan, and Duval were all nominated for Supporting Actor that year but none of them won.

1 because it has less backstory. Don't give a shite about what happened in the old country.

Yeah, I found the backstory a bit tedious and boring.

Some great performances in those movies. James Caan was fantastic.

In my teens, I said II was much better. Today I think it's a toss up.

I thought Duvall acted circles around Caan. I know literally nothing about what goes into acting roles and how hard they are and small nuances that come with them...but here I go.
Every member of the family seemed to have their "thing," while Tom kept it all together like glue. They seemed a bit once dimensional or easier to play than Tom. He had to know how to coddle everybody, keep em in line, be a father figure, and be ruthless when it came time. At any given time I felt like he was a brother, friend, father, and son to whoever he was on screen with. Duvall blew me away in that role. I thought his performance stood out from the rest.

1 because of the Brando/Caan factor. Plus I like mid-late 40s better than late 50s as a time setting.

i think 1 is way above 2 ... brando, caan, duvall, pacino and all the small roles, from paulie to tessio ... and 2's pretty damn good ...

The flashbacks are my favorite parts of the series which is why I like the Epic more than 1 or 2, but I prefer 1 over 2.
The build up is better than the downfall.

I get the same feeling about the Vito death scene. My grandfather looked and acted like Vito when we played in his garden when I was a little kid.

Hard to pick.
I like the first half of 1 the best (the beginning of the movie to the point michael shot the turk and mccluskey)
Overall,I love 2 more. Hyman roth.

I always thought the first half of 1 far superior to the second half too. I guess it's because Brando is so prominent and non evil Michael is far more is far more likable. Also Caan into Jimmy Caan hurts too.
