This movie was to get them even. They could still be almost a billion in debt on the purchase. With no guarantees at this point that Solo and 9 will set them firmly in the black

This is just box office revenue correct? What about all the other Star Wars revenue so far?

Jesus, that's the best way I've seen that put thus far.

Star Wars franchise price tag? $4 billion, the price of Disney's Lucasfilm buy

$1.5B - TFA, after production and marketing
$700M - R1, after P&M
$400M - TLJ after P&M
$2.6B - tot.

Don't forget they have made billions more from merchandising. THAT is where the money is. In fact total merchandising dollars by Disney was around $263 billion in 2016. Up 4.4%

Any questions?

Posting that the movie is profitable (or simply has high earnings) does not mean that it was good. People had to pay to find out if they liked it. This is more of a testament to the former movies.

Let's wait and see future box office numbers to see how much people really like this one, or at least see how invested they now feel.

Personally, TLJ didnt grab me and leave me wanting more. There is no feeling of "I can't wait to see how this ends". I like Star Wars, I will eventually see anything with the brand (which is what they paid for), but I'm not driven to see any of it because of anticipation built up in the last 2 films.

I think that sentiment is probably pretty common.

And that is before discounting for shelling out $4B in cash. Some folks can't seem to comprehend how strong the brand is, which has built in sales.

The continuation of the Skywalker story was their main chance at getting a return on their investment, simply because they would be the first films made.

It's made a Billion dollars in 3 weeks.

A Billion.

Despite the cries of a few neck beard star wars fan boys who don't like girl drivers in charge..

I'd say Disney's investment in the property is more then paying off.

It remains a continuation of the Skywalker story.

Ben Solo is from the Skywalker line...like his grandfather, uncle and mom before him.

People always forget that.

The first rule of Ewok movies is we don't talk about the Ewok movies.

The second rule of Ewok movies is we don't talk about the Ewok movies.

Retailers have reported that SW merchandise for this holiday season was down 56% from TFA. Which means most of that profit is still sitting in warehouses. And only 1 of their 4 major divisions turned a profit, and that was the theme parks division. They are also spending millions on retooling theme parks and hotels to follow SW. Not gonna be a good investment, if the movies don't inspire

Plus, Disney just spent $66B on Fox. Add in the $4B to Lucas and they are definitely questioning the loss of a potential billion dollars as this movie continues its unprecedented nosedive from previous SW entries. Iger suddenly postponed his retirement, and cancelled a possible bid for the White House. All after TLJ numbers starting rolling in

They are worried. They are very worried

How does one refute outlandish opinions and hyperbole besides pointing out how dumb it sounds?

You could explain which characters underwent significant growth on screen? And how that growth relates to the story and plot of the movie.

You could explain how the film successfully had a plot that moved the story of the trilogy along?

You could show me a character that is the clear protagonist and explain why.

You could show me the beginning, conflict, climax, and resolution of the film.

I think they can comprehend what they want out of it.

The toys that made us doc succenctly said:

Disney bought Lucasfilm for only 2 reasons:

1) They wanted to make more Star Wars movies...

2) And expand the internationl market for Star Wars toys

TLJ shows exactly where they are taking this - they've killed off Han and Luke...brought in more diverse characters, more stupid animals, different weapons, different ships, etc.

They had no intention of recreating and sticking with the original toys...just like Lucas it's going to be new ...

There might be a whole Chinese rebellion fleet in the next movie full of Chinese ships and cuddly Pandas that saves the day.

They were shooting for 2 billion and they aren't going come even close to that.
There is no way they could have realistically had 2 billion as a goal. Empire made not 69% of ANH’s worldwide box office and AOTC only made 63% of TPM’s worldwide gross. That would be about 1.29 billion to 1.43 billion for TLJ. So 1.5 billion would have been a realistic goal, not 2 billion.
