the movie shouldn't remind you of all the bad stuff in the world
quote:The Bagby's are truly inspiring. Some great people.
it should show you that despite bad stuff in the world, there are amazing people

I will say that I've always thought people overreacted a bit to the "part." Yes, it's horrible but people always act like it's the worst thing they've ever seen or they they weren't able to sleep afterwards. And that's a little ridiculous to me. But maybe I'm desensitized to bad things to a degree, who knows.

I saw this a long time ago and also had no clue what to expect. I am glad I didn't because it was just so shocking but then I remember this is REAL and not a movie.

Which part was "the scream" that's been mentioned

I agree. For as crazy as she was, the kid died with his mother...which doesn't make it right or good, but he died with his mother in a relatively quick way.
At least his head wasn't slowly sawed off after being gang raped like what's happening to the Yazidi children in the Middle East

I believe that was the part where the headlines flash up on the screen and you learn that she had killed the baby and herself. It's edited with this loud arse scream. It looks like the doc is on YouTube now so when I'm back in front of a computer next week I'll try to find the part and link it (if the thread is still alive).

Oh, and my all time favorite review of the film. This is a must read review imo.

Yay! Finally a Movie That Will Emotionally, Irreparably Scar You for Life!
Dear Zachary / Dustin Rowles
Film Reviews | November 7, 2008 | Comments (0)
Dear Zachary is one messed-up motherfricking documentary, people. And the less you know about it, perhaps, the better. Or maybe not. I knew nothing about it going in, and made the mistake of forcing Mrs. Pajiba-hyphenate to watch it with me. Within 11 minutes, she was sobbing, begging me to turn it off. Before I could find the remote, however, she’d been sucked back into an all-too engrossing story of a man’s freakish, tragic murder. But by minute 32, Mrs. Pajiba-hyphenate was inconsolable but transfixed, watching the next 45 minutes of the documentary with bleary, tear-filled eyes. Before the documentary ended, those tears turned to silent shock. And, for the both of us, it was perhaps the first time we’d ever been completely paralyzed by a film. It is an experience unlike almost any other, and your emotions will run the gamut, from sadness, to pride, to despair, to anger, to ache, and to complete disbelief, and unbelievable, mess-you-the-frick up shock

And actually, I'm going to post the final third of the review. The middle third of the review contains a lot of mild spoilers.

I’ll concede that there is a certain amount of manipulation involved in Dear Zachary, but I didn’t find it malicious. It’s the job, I feel, of a filmmaker — even a documentarian — to manipulate the viewer to achieve the maximum level of emotional impact. Mrs. P-h, however, thought that the emotional impact was too heavy, too burdensome; she felt the unsuspecting viewer needed an opportunity opt out of an experience that had the potential to scar. And maybe she’s right. After all, you go into a horror movie or a comedy knowing what to expect. And even where a film might surprise you with twist ending, it’s not the same when that twist ending is steeped in reality.
In Dear Zachary, you never see reality approach — it blindsides you and then pummels your emotions to a pulp. And maybe that where a critic actually has some value: I’ll tell you that Dear Zachary is a documentary worth watching, that it’s one of the most powerful, gut-wrenching movies I’ve ever seen, but I’ll also warn you that, if you’re softhearted, and if movies have a tendency to remain with you for days, then maybe Dear Zachary carries with it an emotional bell you don’t want tolled. It’s one diddle you can’t undo, homeskillet. Indeed, I found myself in the unusual position of feeling guilty for inflicting Dear Zachary on my wife, not because it wasn’t good, but because, in a way, it was too good and I was left without the one comfortable refrain I could usually rely upon in this situation: “It’s only a movie.”
Sadly, it was also reality, a reality, perhaps, that you don’t want to get emotionally invested in.

I just got done watching the documentary. When I saw how Shirley reacted in the McDonalds to Zachary choosing Kate over her, I knew what was coming next.
I'm sure I've seen some other documentaries that were just as gut wrenching, but right now I'm sure having a problem remembering what those might have been.

Wtf!!!
I saw this thread earlier today while taking a break at work. It only contained a few comments, 7 or 8 at the time. Everything sounded interesting so I went to the netflix app on my phone and added it to my que. I came home tonight, ate dinner with wife and kids, gave bathes to kiddos, had tickle fights, read books, & put them to sleep. Ahh now I have time to make a vodka tonic and relax a little. Remembered the thread I read from earlier so I thought what the heck let's watch "Dear Zackery".
Terrible mistake. I'm so freaking upset now. Just Senseless. I can't exactly say I regret watching it but I def can't say I'm glad I did. Utterly painful. So emotional. Believing in God and Heaven is the only solace I can find in this story. God Bless that sweet little boy, God Bless Andrew.

shame on the legal system. The sad thing is that this is not just an isolated occurrence either although it takes situations like this to an extreme.
Shame on government as well. The fact that no one in government can see these failures on their own and has to be begged and pleaded for change and in situations as severe as these you still have to hold your breath on actionable change, it shows the failure of your elected leaders to do their jobs.
I hate the entire system. It fails in so many ways. This just shows the ultimate failure, but unfortunately it fails daily in other ways affecting untold numbers of people in untold ways as well every day. Very sad.

I had this queued up on Youtube. frick it, I ain't watching this now. I've never seen you people panic. But this documentary has fricked you all up. I want no part of whatever this movie is.

True - and I am grateful for that. But the hours spent and effort put into getting that law passed was completely unnecessary and extra burden on a family that has gone through enough. Elected leaders should be proactive to look around at the system and fix obvious gaps and broken laws.
And these damn judges should absolutely have to answer to their ridiculous decisions that resulted in these tragedies. This is the kind of crap that happens everywhere every day. It's like these judges have no conscious about putting hardened criminals back on the street. But by God...let's be sure to incarcerate a first time pot possession offender. The priorities in the system are so upside down it infuriates me. It's a matter of common sense that I simply don't understand. And the judges just sit there like F you...read the decision and deal with it MF...I'm the judge and you're just a lowly citizen.
Sorry for the rant...it just gets my blood going.
