It's been implied, and he wasn't really a drunk. He like the pills, coke, booze etc. Like most of them do.

What would you all say is consumed more on a crab boat during a season: cigarettes or painkillers?

Cigs / Pills are probably neck and neck, tough to call. Im sure there are some "legit prescriptions" filled before the trips.

I'm sure back in the wild west days before everything got crazy regulated those guys were doing whatever they could to keep going. I'm sure amphetamines and blow were pretty common. That's probably why all the old guys are so broken down and burned out.
