However, Letterman's show on NBC in the '80s was the funniest and most inventive late night show I've ever seen. It was like The Man Show every night (several writers worked on both programs).

If you only know Letterman from his CBS show you've never really seen him, and certainly never seen him at his best.

Very true...Letterman was must see late night tv back then...

10:30 ruins all. It worked for Carson because he was amazing with the interview and just as good at skits. Plus he was around during a tamer time for comedy.

It will be hard to see Conan reign himself in. I'm not sure he works if he isn't on full blast.

Ha! Nothing works for him. I do need to get in touch with him to learn how to sell my soul to the Devil for fame. He must know all the steps.

Does anyone find Kimmel to be funnier than either Leno or Letterman?

I loved The Man Show, but Adam Carolla was the funny one there.

Kimmel is a bad interviewer and even worse standup.

I agree that he doesn't do great work in stand-up, but he was the first of the late night hosts to incorporate funny YouTube clips of everyday people making asses of themselves (such as OT legend LaTarian Milton).

I also like his interviews because he doesn't take them too seriously, and unlike Fallon, he doesn't kiss arse for the whole segment.

I watched Letterman from day one, but because of his political views, I can't turn the channel fast enough when it lands on Letterman.

Who really watches Leno for the interviews? He does have some funny skits.

Kimmel is one writer away from blowing everyone latenight. He is young, up with the times, not political and cutting edge.

BTW who really cares. Most people only watch latenight TV is to put themselves to sleep.

Letterman is hilarious because he is just such a goofy guy and isn't trying to be funny... he is just a complete goon and it's hilarious!

Leno sucks!

leno's stand up is awful. headlines is great though.

letterman has to find something to replace "great presidential moments with george w. bush"

Letterman was such an over the top douche when John McCain stiffed him because of the Econimic scandel, I quit watching him that week. He has become bitter, and is Bill Maher on some levels.

Letterman by a long shot

Not just because i like Letterman overall... his sense of humor is smarter than Leno's, his interviews are much better, his guest list is obviously worse

Leno seems genuinely dumb with some of the questions he asks of his guests. Jay's standup before he was a sub for Carson was genuinely original (and hysterical) and now it's so polished as to have no edge and no unpredictability
