Data's emotion chip - solid storytelling device or cheap and shallow idea?

Admittedly I'm still fairly early in my rewatch of TNG but I have at least a passing familiarity with Data's whole arc.
I kinda prefer the slow, halting and never quite complete acquisition of human traits like emotion for Data. And I've read that was Rodenberry's original vision for the character. I think the chip was best reserved as a Lore thing.
But is there a countervailing view that the chip was a logical and useful progression to the story.

It's a little cheap I guess, but not too bad. My main issue with it isn't with the emotion chip itself, but with how the Data/Lore/Dr. Soong subplots just get conveniently expanded over and over again. The Data character as a whole is cheapened the further the series got from the initial background - Soong made Data. He's one of a kind. Soong died. Oh wait..Data has a brother too. And extra parts floating around that Geordi can install. And a robot mother. And another brother with the intellect of a young child.

Not as cheap as Tasha Yar's.

Speaking from an in universe vantage point of course. In reality, I think her death was maybe the thing that led them to overcome a pretty shaky first season. It opened up space for Worf, Geordi and even Data to expand (though I think Data was always supposed to be an integral character).
Dang, didn't mean to hijack my own thread. Back to Data - the Data/Sherlock Holmes stuff was some of my favorite TNG.

You have to admit, the emotion chip gave us some pretty great/cringeworthy moments in Generations.

Data's death was cheap.
Nemesis is the worst Trek film and always will be simply for the casual way they treated his death. The treated his death like the death of a toaster.
I prefer to believe that the future time stream from the series finale was real and at some point, someone finds enough pieces of data to put him back together thus that was why we saw him in the future.

Ever since Nemesis I've just assumed that the 3rd robot turns into Data after some time passes.

Face it, Patrick Stewart (and maaayyybe Spiner) was the only person on that cast with legit big screen acting chops. I don't think type-casting alone is the reason why Jonathan Frakes has been largely relegated to voice work. The reaction to Data's death was pretty typical of that cast.

I guess they wanted Data to get what he always wanted, but yeah, it did seem to cheese up the story. At least it doesn't affect the series too much.

I wonder where he'd be without Star Trek. Just a stage actor?

Frakes has made his living being a TV director - dude has a shitload of credits. Guess he wanted to live his life behind the camera.
And yes, Data's death was cheap, and the reason I refuse to watch Nemesis.

Going into the series I think Lavar Burton was one of the better known actors on board. But admittedly not on the big screen. And Michael Dorn is a pretty good actor, though, again, I don't think he's done much big screen.

I don't care much either way but from a storytelling point of view, it was probably a little cheap.
I'm guessing Data's journey was originally supposed to be that he was becoming more human, regardless of his ability to feel emotions. Your humanity is determined by your actions and all that. Referenced by Kirk in his Spock eulogy in Wrath of Khan or Kuato in Total Recall.

The guest stars had far bigger acting careers, and there are a lot of them.

Watched Rocky recently and the trivia on Amazon informed me that Michael Dorn was Apollo Creeds bodyguard.
Random fact of the day.

I'm sure we can all appreciate young Ashley Judd.

Can't quite tell. Is that Wesley Crusher getting lip service from Ashley Judd?
If so, I'm gonna have to join the Wesley haters. Dang lucky kid.
