Blade Runner is boring, and it's so called cult following attributed the new boring Blade Runner movie to lose $80M.

I can however, understand why some people love this movie. I personally think it was boring. It simply did not interest me, and i'm usually someone who can sit down and pay close attention to movies like this, but this one simply did not have my interest at all.
It's kind of like Interstellar, where you really have to pay attention the whole time, even though it's a bit boring. I'm interested in Interstellar's story, not interested in Blade Runner's story. Many people will say both of those movies are boring as hell, b/c they are boring, but those that have an interest in the story will sit through it and enjoy it.

I have to say that I get that. People want different things out of film. Obviously, most people are different from me because films like Transformers make billions, and films like Moon don't do all that well, commercially.

It's sad, but acting, storytelling, real craftsmanship in actually making the film is just way undervalued by the suits and viewing audiences, compared to attention grabbing, branding, and mindless (and, IMHO, repetitive and ultimately dull and uninteresting) action sequences.

Top Gun was filmed with zero special effects.

That Tomcat did not go inverted six feet over a MIG. There was hocus pocus used in that shot.

I enjoy Top Gun but it is riddled with aviation and military inaccuracies.

Is that what happened with Blade Runner 2049?

I don't blame Villeneuve for trying. I mean, significant parts of the film looked and felt like Bladerunner. Some of the choices made were not choices I would have made - the validation test or whatever that replaced the V-K? I would not have done it that way or dwelled on it. The twist was interesting, but hackish.

The villain was close. The opening was too bright, they should have merged the hooker/companion characters (and that would have been easy to do). The Harrison Ford extended cameo was just ... awful.

I mean, I give it a solid B- or even a full B, but folks saying it was better than the original are legitimately crazy.

I agree with most of that. I'd probably give it a lower grade, but I thought it was extremely boring and worse, disappointing. They could have cut out a lot of the parts you mentioned and made it a damn good movie.

Blade Runner is one of those movies that people like to say they love because it’s supposedly a classic but Top Gun is far more entertaining, which is the point of movies anyways.

Ok well Varsity Blues is better than 2001: A Space Odyssey. See how stupid that sounds?

too shiny. Can't do it.

Blade Runner is a better film.

But I'll never forget Tarantino's explanation of Top Gun. He hits the nail right on the head. And taking that into account. The script is mind blowingly smart.

I will never understand the cult around BLADE RUNNER. Yes, it's got a cool and influential production design, but so does BRAZIL... and BRAZIL is, ya know, good. BLADE RUNNER is a complete mess of a movie marred by some dreadful acting (Sean Young in a major role was a huge mistake). The theatrical version was marred by a narration that sounded like Harrison Ford read it at gunpoint.

There's some cool visual moments, and Rutger Hauer's speech is always cool, but the movie itself isn't terribly good.

TOP GUN on the other hand is funny, eminently quotable, and has a star making turn by Tom Cruise. Not to mention a killer supporting cast. Sure, it's a brainless popcorn film, but it's a GREAT brainless popcorn film. And I like that it is equal opportunity beefcake, giving the women in the audience something to ogle in the volleyball scene. Take care of the entire audience. That's just common courtesy.

not seeing the stupidness here, and there's a 30 year difference between those movies so it's not really something you should ever compare, even to make a point.

Movies are subjective. Not everyone feels like really having to pay attention and use their brain the whole time while watching a film. Some people do, and appreciate great films that require that, like 2001, Blade Runner, or Interstellar. Some people would rather sit back and relax their mind and simply be entertained, like Fast & Furious movies.

I enjoy watching a basketball game and seeing a team play great team defense, communicating with each other and executing their plan against pick and rolls. most people would rather see Lebron play shitty defense and gamble a lot, and allow the other team to get some dunks off those gambles, but Lebron get 3-4 steals and breakaway highlight dunks. That's entertaining for the majority.

I'm pretty sure he did it deliberately bad because he disagreed with having narration in the film.

Directors cut is so much better

Of course I understand peoples opinions about movies are subjective. And of course I understand the value of a light watch. But where do you draw the line? And you being more entertained by one movie more than another does not mean it's "better". The best movies ever made like Godfather, 2001, and , yes, Blade Runner weren't made to be as entertaining as possible. They have no interest in being crowd pleasers.

Not being a Top Gun hater, it is iconic and a classic in it's own right.

The Godfather and 2001 are both entertaining. Interstellar and Blade Runner are not. Just because a movie has some lofty intellectual or artistic goals doesn't mean it has to be boring.

uh, yeah it does. Entertained doens't have to be by explosions and mindless stories. I was entertained by Interstellar. I was entertained by Not Another Teen Movie. I was entertained by Castaway. I was entertained by The Campaign. I was entertained by Star Wars. I was entertained by Breach. I was entertained by all the Fast and Furious movies. I was entertained by Fracture.

I wasn't entertained by Bladerunner, or 2001. Maybe had i seen them when they came out, i would have been.
If someone watched the Matrix for the first time today would probably say that movie wasn't that great. Most people that watched it in the movie theater when it came out left thinking that was one of the most awesome movies they've ever seen.

someone thinking a movie is better, or the best, is an opinion. there's no clear cut answer to what the best movie ever is.

Again, I respectfully disagree with the notion that Blade Runner is boring. I find it entertaining and rewatchable, so much so that I have the movie and watch at least once a year.

Ok, you think Fast and Furious and Not Another Teen Movie are are better than Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Noted.
