Eastwood, hands down.

To each his own. I am more of a Wayne guy, mostly for nostalgic reasonings, but the fist/dollar series were master pieces.

On the whole I prefer Eastwood also, but John Wayne was in some of the best westerns ever made.

They should have made one together sometime in the 70s. That could have been great.

I don't think that John Wayne was a fan of Eastwood westerns.

Eastwood was built on Wayne /Ford movies
remove the technology and violence allowed in the later movies its not even close

Eastwood. But only because Wayne built that genre

That would be a hard determination for me to make, I really like both. John Wayne was more of a cut and dried good guy vs bad guy while the lines were more blurred with Eastwood, maybe more like a counter culture hero.
If forced to make a choice I guess I would go with Wayne but I would be perfectly fine with either one

John Wayne...and it's not even a contest.

Hard to choose. The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are two of my all time favorite westerns.

Eastwood but that is because of my age.

It was discussed fairly heavily. Wayne, however, was not a fan of the Sergio Leone style western that made Eastwood a star. Evidently, after being approached about a joint project, he sent a letter to Eastwood saying so and Eastwood has had a case of the red arse about it ever since.
I'm not picking sides here... I can see Wayne's point in all this and I can see why Eastwood would still be upset 50 years later.
I don't know how the two of them would have gotten along on set. Wayne was John Wayne. He just dominated any set he was on, for better or for worse. Usually for better. I don't think Eastwood would have tolerated that but if push came to shove it would be Eastwood pushed out the door because... well... its John Wayne.

Wayne did some of his best later in life (The Cowboys,True Grit) while Eastwood's stuff was consistently very good from Leone to Josey Wales to Unforgiven.

Red River, Stagecoach, The Searchers, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, etc.
John Wayne probably made 10x as many Westerns as Eastwood did. He started out working for Poverty Row studios. It's a given that he would have some duds in there.

Eastwood
Though John Wayne had some great lines
The thing that hurts John Wayne is he looks like Conan O’Brien.
Whereas Eastwood looks like Hugh Jackman
And before you Wayners start crying about the Conan comment…

I'd go with Eastwood just because his best is slightly better than Wayne's. It's extremely close though. Searchers and Liberty Valance aren't far behind TGTBTU and Josey Wales for me.

The Searchers
Rio Bravo
Red River
Stagecoach
True Grit
The Shootist
The Sons of Katie Elder
The Cowboys
Etc.
I mean, the list is just more impressive than Clint. If you could only choose from one library you'd have to pick Wayne.
People say Wayne just played one character and that's not really true in his Westerns...the Man With no Name was more one note throughout.

The Cowboys and the Shootist are the closest you're going to get, and they're good ones.
Wayne was in a somewhat different role in The Cowboys (as those who have seen it are aware). Directed by Mark Rydell, who wasn't interested in directing a John Wayne movie but was apparently persuaded with much pleading by Wayne. Rydell wanted George C. Scott.
The Shootist is directed by Don Siegel, who did Two Mules for Sister Sara, Dirty Harry, and later Escape from Alcatraz. It's on par with Unforgiven in some moments, though it falls short of reaching that echelon.
