I wouldn't say it is exactly chilling. It makes sense and should be expected when you think about it.

Watch the PBS Frontline 2 part series The United States of Secrets. It gives a history of the domestic spying programs.

if you edited out all the 30 second clips of dudes looking at a computer screen that have no talking, this movie would have been an hour long instead of 2 hours long.

Did anyone recognize the Baton Rouge boy in the movie?

I'd watch United States of Secrets before Citizenfour. It'll give you a broader history on the spying program with interviews with a handful of whistleblowers.

I think Citizenfour focuses ONLY on Snowden, but I haven't watched it yet.

I watched the first 1/3 last night and there is lots of non-Snowden stuff.

I watched it last night and enjoyed the documentary.

One take away for me was Snowden as a narcisist. Did anyone else get this impression? He was often filmed worrying about his appearance. Also, he and GG discuss giving a big F-You to the government stating "we're not afraid of you" while sitting in a hotel room in Hong Kong.

I felt they both came off as self-indulgent, even if performing a useful public service.

Word, that's what I was looking for.

I'll do that. Thanks.

Yeah, he did seem a little narcissistic. But I imagine most people with his level of intelligence/work experience have that kind of personality.

I still think he did the right thing though.

That was my initial reaction as well during the scene when he was fixing his hair and stuff. Then I thought about it and I think he was trying to change his appearance more than anything since it was right before he left the hotel for the first time since his interview had aired.

I didn't get a narcissistic vibe from them. I think they were explaining how the government typically controls whistleblowers with the media. Whistleblowers typical stay unknown. Which gives the government a chance to call them cowards and attack the individual personally.

Snowden flipped that entire mindset on its head. His information wasnt some knee jerk reacation. Instead it was calculated and he wanted them to find him

I'll watch it again tonight, I was only casually following it last night.

Ok, this is partially what I'm saying. He said he wanted to be found, but he was hiding in Hong Kong. If he wanted to be found, he could have allowed GG and LP to leak all of the documents and then allowed the CIA scoop him up from his couch. Did he really want to be found, or did he want to be known?

I really hope that isn't a serious a question about the CIA picking him up. In my opinion, he wasn't really "leaking" information. But letting the world know that "Yes, we're watching everything you say, text, email, search and read". He was seeking asylum in HK. I wouldn't call that hiding at all.

He wanted the information to get out. Not necessarily "to be found".

But he knew that it wouldn't take them long to figure out who had released the information.

I agree that is his primary motivation, but he claims to be willing to accept responsibility yet seeks to avoid them.

As I stated, I'll watch it again tonight, but I seem to remember him stating he "wanted to be found". This is at odds with hiding in Hong Kong and seeking asylum in Russia.

He said he didn't cover his tracks, and knew the likely outcome for him personally (treason charges). But he wanted the info out before the media got a hold of who he was so the story was focused on the data instead of him.

He didn't say he wanted to get caught, he said he expected to be discovered, but he's not just going to turn himself in to a CIA black site.
