I think it's hard comparing actors with 20 year age gaps between them. Another name I would like to add to this discussion is Russell Crowe. Dude is money in everything he's in and all of his movies are good.

Rank him behind DDL, Oldman, Leo, Penn

I think Ryan Gosling is making the case the be the next Christian Bale. Same pros, minus the con of being an angry mofo.

Can't possibly keep Leo off this list.

You absolutely can. Leo is a good(almost great actor) but at the end of the day all his roles come off as Leo(same problem most on this list have). It's not a knock on him, lot's of great actors are like that; DeNiro, Depp, Nicholson, Pacino like a motherfricker. They're still great. But the actors that truly inhabit a role are few and far between(Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Bean).

Depp is a fantastic actor, one of the best today. But I have a hard time putting him in the top 5.

Sean Bean

So you are comparing Al Pacino to Sean Bean as an actor and Pacino loses this battle?

Granted I am more familiar with PAcino's work than Bean's. But from the performances Al gave in Scarface, Godfather and Dog Day Afternoon were not just a pacino playing a "part". he became those characters

Incredible film.

I forgot to add Depp. To be honest, though, I feel his body of work isn't as good as it should be. Lots of great work in mediocre films, as opposed to guys like DDL's great work in great films.

Could Leo pull off a slapstick or any kind of comedic role?

Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Sean Penn are on another level compared to Christian Bale.

I don't know but he's done just about everything

Romance - Titanic, Revolutionary Road
Crime Drama - The Departed
Adventure - Catch Me If You Can
Biopic - The Aviator
Thriller - Shutter Island
Sci Fi - Inception
Action - Body of Lies

agree on DDL and SP - LD? not so much. Very comparable to CB. I would probably argue CB has shown a lot more range and is much more convincing in the action roles

LD can choose a script and a director tho IMO - he has excellent judgement RE: what roles make good career sense for him (more so than CB IMO)

Whoever says he's top 5 of our generation hasn't seen the acting travesty that was him in Terminator 4. If I heard him yell into the camera one more time, I was gonna cockpunch em.

Retard"full retard"- What's Eating Gilbert Grape

When What's Eating Gilbert Grape came out most couldn't tell if he was acting. I remember questioning if he was actually mentally impaired.

It's actually my favorite of his performances. And The Prestige is one of my favorite movies of all time. It really speaks to how awesome Bale is when the thread went that long without mentioning his brilliant performances in The Prestige and 3:10 to Yuma--which brings me to another brilliant performer in 3:10 to Yuma:

I happen to generally agree. I'm a huge Crowe fan, but Freauxzen might kill you for this.

go back a little further to Velvet Goldmine to see Batman's parents catch him masturbating and see Batman making out with another guy!

Bale is really good. Velvet Goldmine was my first recollection of him. Seeing him successfully play a narcissistic serial killer, a dragon killer, a cowboy and a super hero after that first memory shows he has some range.
