Charlie Hustle and the Matter of Pete Rose - HBO

Watched this over the last weekend. Documentary by Rob Lowe's little brother Chad. Its pretty good but hard to watch sometimes. Not because of the quality but the content. Really makes you think about the whole issue but no surprise, Rose comes off like the jackass that he is. Sort've of sad because I think Rose did it as a last ditch effort to get himself in the HOF but it definitely backfired on him. Guy is his own worst enemy and always has been. Cant argue that he is the all time hit leader, which is why its sort've heartbreaking. Worth a watch if you are looking for something and you enjoy these types of documentaries.

The escape hatch he has:
1. They're eventually going to let some of the steroid bros in, rules/example be damned. Maybe not McGwire and Sosa, but Bonds and Clemens are getting in the HOF.
The irony there is, McGwire and Sosa were 2 of the nicest guys in MLB, Sosa particularly. McGwire was always a bit shy (compared to, say, his Bash Bro Conseco), but was generally viewed favorably as a good guy. Bonds and Clemens were both Grade A assholes, roughly in the same league as Rose.
2. Gambling is fine now, at least from MLB's perspective
The punishment Rose will likely have to serve is that he will die before they induct him.
But, you're right. Rose has always been an unlikeable SOB. His entire attitude towards honesty, frankness, etc., has prevented him from owning up to his mistakes, errors of judgment, and kept him from growing as a person. He's still that same sketchy kid trying to make a living playing ball and looking for every edge (legal or not) to get ahead.
(ETA: I did watch this a week or two ago.)

I think that’s what makes this such a tough watch, as the OP alluded to. We all like a good redemption story and you wait and wait for it in this doc but it never comes. There’s no true remorse or contrition, plus the doc literally illustrates him continuing to lie. (The part where he says he never went to Gold’s Gym followed by footage of him actually being there is priceless) And you realize this is just what he is and there isn’t any hope for him.
Some guys…Jimmy Johnson (and I think we’re starting to see it in Belichick) for example, used an SOB persona to achieve his goals and keep an edge, but once he got out of coaching and didn’t need that anymore, became a likable guy. Rose just didn’t/doesn’t have it in him.

Attempting to upstage the late great joe Morgan at Joe Morgan day when Joe was his best HOF advocate was quintessential Pete Rose. Just a grade A douche bag.

Pete Rose has gotten exactly what he deserves. He is devoid of any integrity or character - a degenerate gambler, liar, bully and total scumbag.
