Now is the time to watch the entire first season of ST: Discovery for free.

Episode 7 is Rain Wilson as Harry Mudd at his best, if you want to sample a stand alone episode.

Is it a better Star Trek series than "The Orville"?

Brian Fuller was pushed out/left after the first three episodes. It's a bit slow and artsy fartsy under his watch. After that it picks up really well and we get a few great episodes and a really well done season arc.

You can see that they were trying to move it from Fuller's auteur bullshite to a more traditional ST feel.

The main difference between this and previous ST's is that it's an ongoing storyline without many standalone episodes.

People try so hard to be cool by saying The Orville is a better ST series than the new ST.

Well, The Orville is pretty decent and on network tv, not a subscription service, so it was a lot easier for people to watch and get into. I'll binge Discovery this week and judge for myself, but I really enjoyed The Orville far more than I thought I would. The first couple episodes were kinda cringe, but it really fell into a groove soon thereafter. Totally mismarketed by Fox. It's basically TNG with a few dick jokes sprinkled in.

I cancelled my subscription to CBS All Access because of Star Trek Discovery. I see no need to put myself through that misery again after seeing how CBS sullied Star Trek.

This show is pretty bad.

I've been sitting at home watching the marathon of Star Trek: The Next Generation on BBC America. Such a great show. I miss this . . . and it is still great. I don't get trying to re-invent the wheel when you have such wonderful, rich history.

I'm finding the people who like this are the same who like the new Doctor Who and the stomach-churning Supergirl. And most are below the age of 21. So, if you like those, you will probably like this too.

@Bham4Tide: You hit the nail on the head. The sad thing is this new show could have been really good had they just made it a continuation 20-30 years after Voyager and tweaked the story-lines to accommodate....Also what they did to the Klingons in both look and culture is atrocious.

It is been noted that they are going to try to "fix" some of these things in the next season....I'll read the recaps here. What I am interested in seeing is the new show with Patrick Stewart. I can't imagine him signing on to something like this without a lot of creative input to the story and creative control over how his character is written.

If you can't handle a female lead character in an ensemble show, this is not for you.

No one cares that the leads in these shows are female. They care that the shows suck.

Ever Watched Star Voyager? Captain Kathryn Janeway was a bass-arse. (7 of 9 was pretty easy on the eyes too). It had a good 7 year run. The writing was a little weak in the first 2-3 season as some of the minor characters were pretty weak. IMO, the three man gals on that show: Janeway, 7 of 9, and B'lanna Torres is what kept that show running.

I didnt even finish the season. It had an opportunity to develop some interesting, nuanced characters and then flushed it all down the toilet by killing them all off. So bad it pissed me off and I'm a huge Trek fan.

Yes. It takes the first 3 or 4 episodes to get its feet under it but then it quickly takes off.

The difference between this Star Trek and the others is that they were more ensemble driven whereas this one is far more individual driven. It also explores some themes that previous Trek series did not (I especially like the look into negative aspects of certain interactions - not saying more so as not to spoil it). As this takes place between Enterprise and TOS it looks like it will flesh out a lot of that period of time (although that wasn't readily apparent to me at first).

People griping about it probably haven't watched beyond the first couple of episodes or else their tastes are limited to that of Frito from Idiocracy.

If you pick it up when they jettisoned the "KES" character and introduce the rescued and ridiculously hot 7 of 9 who was a Female human Borg that they liberated I think you would like the direction. The relationship between 7 of 9 and Captain Janeway was much like a mother raising and incredibly gifted and independent daughter and they quarreled all of the time. (She was only a child when assimilated).....The show is very underrated IMO.

The first three episodes were garbage.

The best episode was the one with the Dwight Schrute blowing up the ship countless times in a a time loop
