The meth became blue after they stole that barrel of methelamine to use instead of the cold medicine. I don't think the blueness had to do with the quality or anything walt does in particular as much as it had to do with the change in ingredients. The reason that batch Todd made wasn't blue was because he burned it.

Wolfman was using the same ingredients and it wasn't blue either. I agree it came with the switch to methylmine as the precursor, which also upped Walt's purity (a little, if I recall, because he also adjusted the process - he is a chemistry genius) - I think the blue is a result of using Walt's customized process with methylmine, otherwise everyone would make it with methylmine and it would all be blue.

True - but again, Wolfman and Todd were using the same precursor and Todd was even trying to copy Walter's process - at least as well as he could remember it - so, ergo, the precursor does not equal the blue. The precursor, plus Walter's process (which has been used by both Gale and Jesse, successfully) = the blue.
ETA: And Walter specifically modified the process when they switched from pseudo to methlymine.
