I saw George Jung died today. Is Blow the last good movie Johnny Depp was the lead in? I also feel old seeing that movie is 20 years old now.

quote:

“So in the end, was it worth it? Jesus Christ. How irreparably changed my life has become. It's always the last day of summer and I've been left out in the cold with no door to get back in. I'll grant you I've had more than my share of poignant moments. Life passes most people by while they're making grand plans for it. Throughout my lifetime, I've left pieces of my heart here and there. And now, there's almost not enough to stay alive. But I force a smile, knowing that my ambition far exceeded my talent. There are no more white horses or pretty ladies at my door.”

One of my favorite movies. Love that quote you included and this one:

“Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again, but life goes on.”

I'm always torn by that movie. The first half is great, but there is just something about the second that seems like a different tone completely.

One of my wife's favorites so we always watch it when it's on.

..supposedly.

But for real, I can't watch that movie. Ray Liotta reminds me too much of my grandfather in that film at the end.

It is one of mine too. Been a while since I've watched it. I will give a go tonight.

Pretty sure that was the point.

Blow is a good movie but it hasn’t aged great since we’ve seen this similar story told 1000 times since and a lot of those times those were better versions of telling that story

Sicario, American Made, Savages, countless other Pablo Escobar properties, I mean we’ve beaten the drug trade angle to death over the last 30 years, this isn’t exactly a controversial opinion

ETA I really don’t know what got everyone all riled up about my post like I said it’s good, it just does have a ton of drug movie/bio pic movie tropes that it relies on and that we’ve seen do more effectively in the years since which makes me not enjoy the movie as much on the rewatches.

You say it hasn't aged well because there are a plethora of movies that have done it better, but I enjoy rewatching Blow from time to time. Those other movies you listed, once was enough for me. To say there have been a ton of movies in the last 30 years that chronicle the life adventures of a drug smuggler/kingpin AND were done more effectively than Blow is incorrect IMO. The fact that you have only been able to name 3 movies so far to back up your claim is a testament to that, and not only are those not better than Blow, but only one actually qualifies to be compared directly to Blow and that's American Made. Sicario is about an FBI agent and Savages is about a couple of dudes who lose the middle piece of their Eiffel Tower and have to go save her, it's a kidnapping movie.
