My how she would laugh if she knew you said that ... and then she would strike me.

side note:
did you ever play the blade runner video game from like 1997? That's what originally got me into the film. I was 13, played and LOVED the game, bought the director's cut DVD(actually my 2nd ever DVD purchase) the same year.

No.

It's excellent if you want to get into the blade runner universe. The events take place in 2019 and it's a parallel story to the original even though it's its own thing

Another problem with the film - they never gave K anything like that moment.
Yes, he saves Deckard. Yes, he delivers Deckard to memory implant girl. No moment like that.
Now, it would have had to have been great - so, with the story they had, maybe K's death scene was right. It did hit me in the feels a little, echoing Batty's death.
Another sneaky way the original is genius - Deckard is the "main character" the ostentible protagonist and all that. From the time he enters the Bradbury, until the he finds Rachael at his apartment, he says exactly 1 word - "Finished." Chatty Batty is raging the entire time. Once you've seen it once (and maybe the first time if you're sharp) you realize that Batty is dying - the numb feeling in the hand (similar to left arm/hand numbness in a heart attack) - and every time that drive to stay alive - at least long enough to kill Deckard (which seemed almost certain even before Deckard dropped his gun, and guaranteed after) -
Then characters not friendly to Deckard deliver the key lines of the entire film - the Tears in Rain monologue and my sig quote.
Elegant. Beautiful. Perfect. I wasn't expecting exactly the same thing in 2049, but "something" you know?

Been avoiding this thread. Just returned from seeing it. Incredible movie! Not a single zit face teenager to be seen.
I bit, hook, line and sinker that Ryan Gosling was the child. The twist was great, mood music incredible, just finding someplace to start describing this is like trying to eat an elephant. You have to figure out where to start.
A classic that over whelms the senses in all ways.
Ps: Ace, brother, your 15 minutes is over. Nobody cares about your "meh" review, except you. You seem to keep coming back in to this thread and regurgitating the same opinion over and over, as if you saying it enough times might convince somebody that was really blown away by the movie into somehow feeling it wasn't. In reality, it's more likely just you trying to convince yourself you didn't enjoy it as much so you can maintain a certain contrarian position in the face of so many respected posters critically loving it.
In my view, it was the most compelling, moving and completely enveloping movie that I've seen, felt and heard in a very long time. The closest would be ex machina, which was chilling in its psychological twists.
That said, I was ready for it to end when it ended, but never felt that it was missing something in the filler that made it long. It was visually surreal and a feast for the senses in a very visceral way that left me exhausted from the tension and very satisfied.

There are some interesting themes going on. Like Luv kills Joi. Because love kills joy. So K/Joe had to let go of love in order to have joy. His love for Joi was making him sad because he sensed all along that it was artificial, but he wanted to believe. However, in order for him to find peace, he had to let her go.
Also, I'm not so sure Joe dies at the end. But they certainly give the impression that he may have.

It was better than "meh", but it didn't live up to my skyhigh expectations.
Huge fan of the first one, and Villeneuve is one of the best in the biz. I was so psyched about it that I made my first trip to the theaters since Inception.
I'll reiterate what others have said: the movie was 10-15 minutes too long. The sex scene was too long and boring (which was especially shitty since it involved one smokeshow and one really good looking woman). The casino scene also lasted too long and it was weird how Deckard just peaced out afterward for a minute or two. None of the action scenes had the intensity of the brilliant final act of the original. The movie didn't have the wow moments/great dialogue like Batty's death, Batty meeting Tyrell, the opening interview, or to a lesser extend Gaff's interjections.
The movie absolutely drew me into the world, though. One of the most visually stunning movies I've seen. The twist did surprise me. It introduced me to Ana de Armas, who may be the best looking woman on the planet. And while, again, it should have been 10-15 minutes shorter, I was only very briefly bored towards the end of the sex scene.
Most of all, it took me 3 or 4 rewatches of the original to fully appreciate it, so my final opinion on this one won;t be settled for years. At first I thought it was a weak 7/10, but that was with my unfairly holding it to the standard set by the original. I'll say solid 7 for now.

K/Deckard fight should’ve been cut entirely from the movie

I guess I was the only person who enjoyed the K/Deckard fight
All of the noise and chaos I thought was done well. And by that, I thought it was somewhat uncomfortable and that was what they were going for in that situation.

Not to pile it on but as the only one in here putting forward a negative review, I figured I would engage. I love the first BR, easily one of my all time favorite films. I just got you, and although I didn't think 2049 was better, I did enjoy it for what it was and I thought it continued the story in a meaningful way.
quote:
1. Same issue I had with Interstellar - they mix the music and ambient sounds way too loud for large format screens - just obliterates any sort of nuance to the dialogue.
I wouldn't disagree here.
quote:
2. The story was beyond bad. I get the nice twist - but that's the only thing about the story that was remotely interesting.
I think the story, the theme was a little more subtle this time...and a little more drawn out putting forth a film that's both powerful, but overstays its welcome. BR was perfectly paced, whereas 2049 was a tad long. I think it had more in it that didn't make it onto the screen.
Where BR is about the struggle between life and death, and what it means (...but then again, who does?) I feel 2049 is about the substance of life, a much less black and white exploration.
quote:
4. The movie was way, way, way too brightly lit to be a Bladerunner sequel. Now, I give it kudos in capturing the L.A. overheads, the spinners and the street scene - on those, Villeneuve and Deakins were spot on. Also, the retro interiors were good - K's kitchen was excellent.
This complaint is questionable, there were plenty of dark street/rain shots. I felt that the Vegas setting and the emphasis on snow were slightly problematic, but not overtly so as to ruin. Plus, water and snow had important interplay in the film.
quote:
5. This is by far Harrison Ford's worst performance in a film. Breathtakingly bad - the low point of the cast. Part of it is the story and dialogue.
I actually agree here, but I think that served the story. I'm not sure it was "BR Narration" bad,
I'd say my negatives were a little different:
1. Failed to wrap up the Wallace story
2. Were not as clear on where Joe came from other than him being a clone. Did Tyrell create him? The rogue Replicants hiding the daughter? Etc. I needed a little more there.
3. They missed the boat on really digging into the whole soul question. They hit it from a few angles - Joe, Joi, etc.

I've seen it twice and hate it.
BR1 gets a solid A.
BR2049 gets a D.
The pace and length were painfully slow and long. Jarad Leto should limit his roles to homosexual cowboy sissies.

He was in the movie for maybe 7 minutes, and what was so bad about it? Sounds like you just don’t like him
