Watched Demon 79 last night, and it's in the same vein as Mazey Day for me, although it was a good bit better at least. But it was essentially trying to be more thriller/horror than what BM has always seemed to be about.

So in terms of quality, I'd rank them:

Beyond the Sea (top tier episode)
Loch Henry (middle tier episode)
Demon 79 (not really BM style)
Joan is Awful (middle-to-bottom tier, but very BM style)
Mazey Day (bottom tier, and also not BM style)

While Loch Henry was at least SOMEWHAT tied to technology, two episodes really weren't at all. Which is fine I guess, but they would have been much better received by me had they been standalone episodes in some other universe not named Black Mirror.

All in all though, I'm just glad we got a new season. I'll watch these as long as they put them out.

This was my thought as well although was it confirmed they don’t have cocks? Seriously though Lana was the first woman David had interacted with since losing his whole family. It’s obvious he was going to start to feel an attachment. Cliff is just a jealous and possessive man. You get the vibe that part of the reason he brought his family into seclusion is so his wife will be isolated. He wouldn’t even let her host a party with neighbors. It makes you wonder if he was always this way or if he just cannot get used to the idea of using the replica. From the very beginning David seemed much more comfortable and was intimate with his wife. Cliff may have never gotten fully comfortable with the idea and thus wanted to keep his family hidden while he was away from them.

but that is exactly what they are

Demon 79 is a "Red Mirror" episode

quote:

In a conversation with the Radio Times, creator Charlie Brooker explained: “‘Demon 79’ opens with a ‘Red Mirror presents’ title sequence, marking it out as ‘different-from-yet-adjacent-to’ Black Mirror. This is because, typically, Black Mirror has focused on tech dystopias or media satire, whereas this story has a stronger supernatural element, harking back to 1970s horror. The episode is almost unclassifiable.”

expect more of these in future seasons

I don't dislike a "red mirror" non-tech episode on the face of it, I just want it to be good. Mazy Day was insulting trash. Demon 79 was alright but mostly forgettable.

oh I agree

just saying that they are trying to build this different, but adjacent universe with the "Red" episodes

I noticed that at the beginning but didn't connect that it was them nodding to a different genre of BM episodes. That makes sense I guess.

I'm okay with it honestly, as long as they're entertaining. Was Mazey Day also presented as Red Mirror? I can't recall if it was or not.

MD and D79 were both relatively entertaining to me. D79 was obviously the much better entry, but I didn't hate MD as much as most in the thread. I do get why people hated it though.

And if they are gonna do this "spinoff" Red Mirror genre, so to speak, I just want it to a) be good, and b) not interfere with the amount of Black Mirror we get.

Loch Henry was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Five minutes in when the bug eyed dude is telling the story about his dad being the only one at the scene, I turned to my wife and said “the dad did it and all those Bergerac tapes are the torture tapes.” They telegraphed it way too early.

Watched Mazey Day last night and jokingly said “is she a werewolf” when the moon came out, and then she was and we couldn’t stop laughing. Show has gotten dumb as hell.

It’s also frustrating how stupid they make the characters. The girlfriend in Loch Henry acts like she’s never met someone’s parents before, watches the torture tape on full volume and leaves the tape in the VCR, then has to go for a walk in the middle of dinner. Real subtle dumbass.

The girl in Mazey Day, instead of calming down and explaining to the cop what’s happening, decides the best course of action is to lunge for the cop’s service weapon. It’s painful how stupid these characters are.

Race/sexuality were not even remotely part of the stories/messages.
This isn't exactly true. In the one with the English department store, it attempted to show some history of race relations in the UK. I'm not complaining, but race absolutely was a part of that episode.
