It's not yelling, it's mocking.

And your defense of this film is really passionate, I’ll give you that

You've never seen the film, but reddit and wikipedia and NPR told you what to think about it.

I see what you and dawgfan9328475 are doing. Trying to derail the topic to get it anchored or deleted because discussion of a 1915 historical-fiction film is simply unacceptable. Because [lowercase whisper] racism.

I literally stated that it has a massive importance in film history, hell I had a film class and this was one of the films we had to discuss. I think it’s perfectly fine to talk about, but I do find it funny that you’re trying to deny the obvious racism that this film has.

"South" Wisconsin 1924

The First World War brought about drastic changes in the United States militarily, politically, and socially. The upheaval brought about by that period gave rise to the Ku Klux Klan throughout the country. The Klan considered itself a reform movement promoting 100 per cent Americanism, separation of church and state, Protestant fundamentalism, White supremacy, anti-Catholicism, and anti-Semitism. The Klan was brought to Wisconsin in 1920 and after a rather slow start, it enjoyed some success in the years 1923, 1924, and 1925. Because of poor leadership, a shortage of issues, and a growing resentment against hate speakers, the organization failed. By 1925 the Klan was having membership problems and by 1928 it was almost nonexistent.

Ku Klux Klan (1915- ) -- Wisconsin

Prior to the Great Migration of uneducated southerners, blacks and whites, northern blacks generally lived amongst the whites as they had embraced the culture and education. They weren't any more ostracized than Italians or Irish. (Or Catholics which is my religion.)

Yeah Wilson was a Klan sympathizer. But had Europe listened to him there wouldn't have been A WW2.

I've seen it and it's trash.

Propaganda in its purest form.

I DGAF what a "cinematic masterpiece" it is.

It’s funny, when people complain about “woke culture” there is rarely discussions of the cinematography of the movie.

But when people watch Birth if a Nation randomly… it’s purely as lovers of film craft.

For some, diversity in casting and film messaging is a deal-breaking moral crime impossible to look past, while even the most blatant racism and racist messaging are ignorable with ease.

I'll leave it to the class to do the psychoanalysis on why that may be...

Link me to the post where I said this film didn't have obvious racism. Go on. They are bundled nicely in this neat little package of a thread. Shouldn't take you more than three minutes to find me "deny the obvious racism that this film has."

I'm going to try to stick up for deeprig here. I haven't seen him deny how obviously racist Birth of a Nation is; the film's racism was heavily criticized when it was released. I think he's merely arguing that there's more to it than just the lightning-rod propaganda in the final act, which is understandably difficult to overlook.

Someone quoted Roger Ebert's assessment on page 1, that it was a great film arguing for evil. Other contemporary critics still have it over a 90% rating on RT. More than simply great cinematography, the narrative between the Cameron and Stoneman families is compelling. I also think the intensity of the Lincoln assassination scene holds up after all these years, even though everyone knows it's coming.

To quote Ebert again, all serious moviegoers must sooner or later arrive at a point where they see a film for what it is, and not simply for what they feel about it.
