That was pretty good.

There's been about a 40 year (perhaps longer) trend of downplaying the artistic merits of anything other than intense character studies of troubled people.

Oh, the popcorn entertainment sweeps the technical awards all the time (sound, sound editing, visual effects, etc.) and they may throw a audience pleaser like Return of the King a bone every once in a while, but the trend is that if the character are not dark, cynical, and perhaps mentally unwell, the performance won't win an Oscar.

Either that, or the character is mentally stable but has a physical disability that hinders him/her.

Rain Man is an example, but still a pretty uplifting movie.

Starting with Leaving Las Vegas, the goal for every Oscar seeking actor was to go full mentally unstable.

Bill Mahers rips the Oscars

Synopsis: The best picture nominees are all depressing films.

WARNING: He gives major spoilers for the films.

This was a very long rant to make a point.

One of the reasons that this year's films are so depressing is that a ton of films were delayed due to Covid. I'm guessing that a couple of those would've pushed out downer films from this year's list.

His analysis would hold more water if last year's nominees hadn't included a kick-arse auto racing film, a Nazi dramedy that had people laughing out loud, and a 60's nostalgia film that replaced a historic horror with a happy ending. Even the winner Parasite had some real laughs in it.

Parasite
1917
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

I think the argument holds more water for the acting categories.

He’s not wrong, but holy shite that was one of the most annoying, condescending, self righteous deliveries of a speech I’ve ever seen. And it was made worse by the stupid audience clapping every ten seconds like when the ducking President speaks.

I feel like I’ve seen Maher clips before and it wasn’t as bad as that. Good Lord.

He’s wrong on one thing though, The Oscars have always been about Hollywood patting themselves on the back. Always.

I think his major point about Oscar-bait films being self-important still stands. It's been a minute since the Academy awarded their top prize to a motion picture that was widely regarded as a crowd-pleaser. You probably have to go all the way back to 2003-04 when The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King took home Best Picture. And before that, you have to go back to Gladiator.

That's Bill Maher for you. He thinks he's smarter than he really is because he's an atheist.

It's a pretty normal rant from him.

When Covid first hit he did the show from his house and I think it actually got better without the clapping seals in the audience. Maher proved he was actually funny and didn't need an audience to convey that. The other late night shows proved how fricking pathetic and unfunny they are. Watch any episode of Colbert or Kimmel without their audience and then go watch Tim Dillon's podcast and you tell me who is actually funny.

If any of the Lord of the Rings were released today, I don't think that any of them would be nominated for Best Picture and the best award it'd be up for was Best Adapted Screenplay.

Trying to get into TD and his bits just go on way too long and feels like I’m wasting an hour each podcast bc he could actually hit the big subjects out there but instead he does his screaming bits

Tim can be good in small doses. Like when he ripped into his aunt a few weeks ago without a frick given and revealing extremely personal details about her, I was like “Holy fricking shite” laughing my arse off. I’ve never seen anyone light into a relative like that ever in public: I have a family: it’s Joe Rogan and Candace Owens, my mother and father
