How did we get to page two without anyone mentioning Star Wars?

Saving Private Ryan is what I would always use to show off my surround sound back in the day

Actually Scream should get a mention.
In a lot of ways, the beginning with Drew Barrymore made this movie as big as it became.

Lord of the Rings deserves a mention for its concise prologue.

Yes.
Honestly when I saw it I thought maybe it will actually come close to the books, but in a cinematic way.
Truly covered the backstory in a way that newbies would understand, and aficionados would respect.

So quiet in the theater
Everyone in shock to see that scene that showed how bad war really is
This. Seeing it in a packed theater back in 1998. The first 24 minutes - you felt exhausted and horrified when that scene finally ended.

I think Tolkien would have enjoyed the first 20 or so minutes of the Extended Edition (not theatric since I think he’d be pissed at them leaving out “Concerning Hobbits”), but after that I don’t think he would have liked the theatrical versions at all.
