Donnie Darko is a troubled high school kid who falls for the new girl (and vica versa). He seems like the unpopular weird one with his own group of friends and he has a rival, cool kid student that picks on him some. He has a sister who is also in high school and is trying to get accepted into Harvard. He also has a kid sister in middle school. Barrymore plays the unconventional teacher while Beth Grant plays the strict, by the book antagonist teacher. All those things make it look on the surface like your typical high school movie.

it has been awhile since i have seen DD but you talked me into it

well I mean, in no way should Donnie Darko be #3 and ahead of the Breakfast club.

The Breakfast Club had a huge cultural impact, Donnie Darko is a cult film.

DD is a better made movie than BC, and I'm a huge BC guy.

Predators was a better made movie than the original..but the original still blows it away.

for the 1980's, that movie took a detention day..and made it very entertaining.

that movie was highschool.

Donnie Darko was about other things, with the small background of highschool. so as far as the "Best Highschool movies"..

can't argue with that.

My school made us watch it in H.S. as freshman a years later as some sort of peer counseling/orientation.

I think the movie has some backlash because it was so big. But it would be crazy not to be on any Top 10 list. It's the quintessential "high school" movie as I define that term...being primarily about the pressures and situation of high school...dating and peer pressure. Which is why I put Can't Buy Me Love on my list and which is why Clueless probably belongs...over sports movies like Hoosiers or FNL or All the Right Moves (not entirely a sports movie) or Risky Business. I think Heathers probably belongs b/c it deals with H.S. issues but in an exaggerated black comedy way.

I'm not hating on the breakfast club, it's a great film. and i get your argument, but i'm looking more at what the overall best movies that are directly related to high school are rather than the best movies that express the high school experience.

using your criteria i would probably put BC #1 fwiw.

I agree, its like if you were to do a "best movie about college", and put Animal House in the bottom five.

Having Donnie Darko in the top 3..may as well have The Faculty at #1

This makes the list very subjective. Its gotta be more about what was or was not HS to be on a "best" high school movies, otherwise it should be called " best movie most representative of some peoples HS experiences" JMO

I think it's about the overall impact of the film and what it means to people. What the film does when given to an audience. staying power. Guess im just seeing it different.

I think thats a factor for sure. But not as big a factor as acting, script, cinematography,or direction should be. Maybe Im just going to deep on movies about HS.

I like your list. I think Grease and Napoleon Dynamite belong though. Not sure who you would bump though.

Does it count if they are skipping school? If so I nominate Juice. Tupac nailed the role of Bishop.

None of the top three are your typical high school movies. They all have the backdrop of high school but are about something else. BttF: time travel and what that entails. Hoosiers: Basketball team and their coach. Donnie Darko: An emotionally troubled kid. Out of those three, I think Donnie Darko looks the most like a typical high school movie but with a much darker element.
