Saw this on Netflix and gave it a shot. Not usually a big Jack Black fan but the synopsis sounded interesting enough.
Good story line. Strangely funny. Jack Black was surprisingly really good in this role. True story as well.
Anyone else like it?

I watched it a couple of years ago on HBO or one of those.
Spoilers*
I really enjoyed it. Jack black more subdued than normal, which I liked. Shirley McClain was hilarious IMO. Very true story, think the real Bernie just got sent back to jail as well. Some of the real people were in the movie as well. Very solid character study

Pretty good move. J.B. did a damn fine job.

It’s Richard Linklater, so it couldn’t be bad. I enjoyed it, though certainly not his best.

Disagree. Outside of the BEFORE trilogy, I think this is the best Linklater film. I think it is flat out genius, and i love how the town is essentially a Greek chorus which totally supports Bernie. I love this film to death. No pun intended.

It was excellent. Using real people for the townies was genius.

If you guys like this off-beat Linklater...
You should watch Me and Orson Welles. One of the best portrayals of Welles in movie.

Texas Monthly has an article "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas" that was the inspiration for the movie. Worth a read.
The striking blonde lady who played one of the local townsfolk is Matthew McConaughey's 80+ year old mother, Kay.
The stockbroker they called Loyd Hornbuckle in the movie is a real guy of a different name who worked in Shreveport. A Canadian treasury official changed a tax policy that hurt the broker's investments, so the broker would have a few drinks at Superior and then get on the keyboard to light the guy up with threats. It resulted in him going to the federal pen. Maybe there is another movie there.

The edit into this scene is amazing.

My grandma lived a solid 30-45 minutes from Carthage. Having not known anything about the story or the town, I still felt like I’ve met every single person in that movie. RL is always a good “slice of life” director but god damn that’s his best work.

You nailed it. This is a GREAT movie & one of Linklater's best. Growing up in North Louisiana, Carthage felt exactly like the small town I grew up in. To me this is Jack Black's best performance. This is such an underrated movie. It is so great.

It's not even Linklater's best film starring Jack Black.

Living in Shreveport, I met a bunch of people from Carthage. I asked everyone about Bernie. One guy knew him personally and said he was the warmest and most genuine person. And the banker lady was really that bad.
I’ve met one family out of about ten who said they didn’t like him.
Very good and different type of comedy.
I hate that he’s back in jail.

My mom was telling this lady in Shreveport who I guess was an acquaintance about how much she liked the movie. Yeah...turns out the lady he killed was her aunt.
