From a commercial standpoint, this is easily one of the most important comic book films of all-time. While Superman: The Movie made an impact with the genre, it was Batman '89 that first demonstrated the box office potential comic book films had. It finished #1 at the box office that year, hauling in over $250 million at the domestic box office. Adjusted for inflation, that would be just over $500 million in 2019 dollars.

Tim Burton was the perfect director at the perfect time. The production design and art direction were both top notch, and Danny Elfman's score is probably second all-time on the list of most iconic comic book movie soundtracks (behind John Williams' score for Superman).

My favorite track/scene from that movie is no doubt Descent into Mystery, the scene where Batman takes Vicki Vale into the bat cave.

I was living in a big metropolitan area up north with tons of malls. You'd look down the walkway of every mall and see the bat symbol in every window. It was glorious.

One of the first movies I saw in a movie theatre, went with my mom. Remember like it was yesterday.

ETA: Kudos to them for having an actual hot actress play the lead female role. Very bold strategy.

Still my favorite batman or superhero movie.

Maybe it's sentimental, but If you were a little kid when this came out, you remember all of the huge marketing campaigns around it.

It was a giant, giant movie. It was so unique in that I think it captured the darkness of batman better than anything before or since.

I had the poster, t-shirt, and got the VHS as a birthday gift, after having batman-themed party with a batman cake: It was absolute heaven for a 5-yr old.

I can still see that WB animated short before the movie with Daffy and Bugs Bunny, and the Diet Coke batmobile commercial with Alfred. LINK

I had a Batman party at Fun Factory that year.
Batman was super huge in 89.

Just bought this. I wish the Batman end theme when he's looking at the signal would have returned in Batman Returns.

Still the best Batman movie by far for me. I know I'm in the minority on that.

Kim Basinger at 50+ would have still been a better choice in The Dark Knight than that basset hound they cast.

Keaton was great. Funny how a lot of people thought he was miscast and now years later he’s considered one of the best. All star cast all around. My kids are growing up during this new superhero era but I was 7 when Batman came out. It’s still one of the best to me!

I completely agree with all of this.

I was never into reading comics but obviously everyone knew the big superheroes. Other than the Adam West show, I had no idea how dark Batman could be.

You could feel the damp and grime of Gotham City in the theater. It was an absolute homerun on every level. Keaton, Nicholson, and Palance were outstanding, Basinger was gorgeous, even Wuhl, Billy Dee, Bob the Goon, Gordon, and the fatass that played Eckhardt were so good in every scene.

Burton created such a hauntingly memorable cityscape and as others have said Elfman’s score was just so perfect. It all just worked.

So many perfect shots in that movie, starting right from the beginning on the roof to the very last shot of the Bat Signal.

I actually still have the poster in my media room, probably my favorite of all time

And yes the marketing and merchandising was phenomenal. I ate Batman cereal every day until it was discontinued. That combined with Hi-C Ecto Coolers equalled cavities galore

Watching Dick Tracy try to recreate that same magic the following summer was just futile.

Keaton is still the GOAT Batman. I prefer Bale as Bruce Wayne.

I was born in 1990 and the two Burton Batman’s are the GOAT, imo.
