I think that has to be where they are going. Do we know if there are more seasons after this? If not, I feel like they are setting up Barry to make some sort of sacrifice to have meaning.
I thought episode 2 did a good job of making Sally a bit more likeable, or at least make the audience have empathy for her. She's in a pretty fricked up situation, even if she doesn't know the full extent of it.
Also, I'll agree with the poster above. I don't care if characters are gay, but Noho Hank's obsession with Cristobal is funnier if it's just a friendship thing. It makes his character more endearing even as a crime boss. Here's a criminal that is so childlike that he gets excited just to spend time with his friend. Now, those scenes where he obsesses over Cristobal are less funny because it's simply a love angle.

This season has started off pretty dark. I think the writers are trying to make the audience dislike Barry as opposed to seasons 1 & 2. Barry really seems to be losing it and going down a dark path.
Let’s be honest, it had to go darker at some point given he’s a hitman and killed his friend’s GF (and who now knows he did). But it’s done a good job of keeping its comedy edge despite the darkness.

Definitely where it’s going.

Meh. I don’t agree. If not wasn’t clear to you in S2 that Noho had the hots for Cristobal, I dunno what to tell. It’s still funny as frick though because that season it was portrayed like a playground crush.

There is a fourth (and I think final) season.

Supposedly Hader is in the process of writing season 4

This season really is incredibly dark. I don’t mean that in a bad way either.
It is interesting how they have made Barry into the guy to root against rather than the person you always seemed to be rooting for.

Noho’s text to Barry
Also anyone think that reaction from Gene going off on Barry kickstarts his acting career?

I think they look at the scene when Gene went off and decide to use in the film, then Gene gets nominated for an award.

I’m not sure what else they could have done after the way season 2 ended. But it’s bringing me down some. I still like it but I am not really looking forward to each episode at this point. Maybe because the humor seems more out place now? I don’t know, maybe I just blocked out the bad as I was ripping through the first two seasons.

It's time to get Barry and Hank back together. They balanced each other out.

Something needs to happen.
The show lost a little of its magic in the 3 years it was away
It’s not bad. It just doesn’t bring the joy it once did

I agree. I just watched the most recent episode and it was a chore to get through. It made me realize the entire season has felt that way. None of the narratives are particularly entertaining.

I enjoyed episodes 1 & 2, but this last episode was just not interesting or funny.
I particularly dislike the plot line of the Katie character so concerned about Barry’s abuse of Sally. Her character is annoying.
I hope there are so more jokes next episode with Barry and Hank blowing some shite up.

The balance between drama and comedy has been off so far this season. While I don't necessarily have an issue with comedy shows trying to have serious episodes, the problem here is they're trying to do it with stories that are too absurd to be taken seriously as a drama.
The plot line of Barry trying to get Gene an acting job so he forgives him for murdering his girlfriend is inherently silly. None of us believe this is a reasonable way to handle this situation. Now this isn't the first silly plot the show has had, but usually it makes us laugh enough that we don't expect the character decisions to be completely realistic.
It's a similar story with Noho Hank and Cristobal, two characters clearly set up to be comedic, trying to maintain a relationship in the middle of a gang war. This worked the first two seasons because it was funny and deliberately outlandish, so it wasn't really a big deal if a lot of it was a stretch. However, seeing them text their concern for each other is pretty boring.
The only plot line which is believable as a serious, dramatic story, is the one with Sally being in an abusive relationship. Unfortunately, that's the one most of us care the least about.

You hit the nail on the head. It could be an inevitable path this show was going to take. It was a comedy with great acting that had serious plot lines. So, eventually, the stakes were just going to get way too high for the comedy to pair well with the drama.

Vice Principals did a good job at being dark but never forgetting it was mainly a comedy. The plot lines got ridiculous but the comedy evened it out.

Also, not only does Hank balance out Barry, but acting balanced out Barry as well. Season 1 was great because Barry was two different people. Now, he is pretty much the same fricked up guy in all areas of his life. I think they still have time to pull it off, but it's a real bummer right now.
