Show is already filming season 2 and has recast Donal Finn in the role.

No reason given.

The dice didn't fall the way Harris needed them to

Yeah, this is not great.

From what I am hearing he may not have been with them for awhile, and the reshoots may have been done to minimize his role a little in S1 to make it not as jarring when the actor is changed for S2 (and to be fair...Mat is almost an entirely different character around Book 3).

Not sure what the deal with Harris is, but he was never seen any at any cast parties, with any of the cast on Instagram or anything, had no social media himself to speak of.

odd.

Game of Thrones had several characters recast throughout the seasons: The Mountain, Daario, etc.

But none as central of a character as Mat, in my opinion one of the 3 most important characters. Something pretty bad had to happen.

Yeah, Mat was kind of a little bitch in the first two books.

I just hope this is a case of the actor being a dick IRL or asking for too much money, and NOT a case of social media wrong think.

I'm cautious in my anticipation of this show. You can definitely cut about 100 pages off each book if you stop mentioning nyneave pulling on her braid or one of the mean girls sniffing loudly, but two books is a lot of material for 8 episodes per season.

He must have royally fricked up in some way. No other reason to get replaced.

His scant social media disappeared way back in January around the time they were going back after a covid break, and there were some twitter rumors way back then that he had left the show that people dug up today.

He hasn't been seen with any other cast in photos or social in about a year.

Looks like he may have left a long long time ago.

Yeah, there's a lot going on to be only 8 episodes, I agree. I wasn't super excited after seeing the trailer either, looked like all the emphasis is on the magic aspect vs other story lines.

First of all, it doesn’t cover 2 books. It’s almost all Eye of the World with some bits of 2 and 3.

But as the showrunner has said, this is a 14 book series and a prequel. And it’s finished. They are adapting Wheel of Time not individual books.

They are going to have to cut. A lot.

All these big budget fantasy shows I’m very cautious about. I trust Fun Bunch’s taste, so I hope he’s been right here, but I’ve never read Wheel of Time.

I can only speak to the books which I love and realize aren’t for everyone due to RJ’a long winded writing style.

I can’t speak for the show yet as I haven’t seen it.

I understand that. There are a lot of empty words. Tolkien could have told this story in 7 books.

Whoa... that's a shite load of content to condense. I'm glad I haven't read any of the books and will be going in with pretty much zero knowledge of the story b/c that seems like a recipe for pissing the book fans off big time.

Most book readers - at least the vocal ones online - understand shite is going to get mixed around, cut, merged, etc. It is actually going to start off with Season 1 being very different in a lot of ways for various production reasons.

The first 3 books had kind of similar trajectories and in closings so they are most likely ramping up some storylines to be antagonists, moving some antagonists up slightly in the timeline and doing some other-things to not give too much away too soon in regards to certain story elements (those are just my opinions from having followed the production fairly closely over the last couple years).

They have a some positives going for them in that (1) the showrunner is a childhood fan (2) they hired a sort of book research person who is able to answer questions, present text as answers in how characters should be and (3) the author's wife / editor of the series and Brandon Sanderson who finished the series out are both being used in production as well.

The teaser trailer had a lot of little hints and nods to the books that only readers would notice which makes it seems like they really know the characters well.

One thing though is that he doesn't actually do a whole lot in Book 1 - I won't go into spoilers but he is kind of just a guy who makes mistakes and creates some minor conflict driving the plot. With some changes in locations they are making in the show as we have discussed, the bulk of that probably won't be in the show and the reshoots may have taken him out of some extraneous scenes.

If it had to be a main character - I think he is probably the best one for it to have been and this would have been way more jarring and worse if it had happened after Book 2 / Season 2 events.

Not only that, the word and page count is enormous. I believe it is the largest series by word count. It’s pretty damn huge. A lot of fluff though.

As Sneaky Sally said without getting into detail, while Mat is everyone’s favorite character, he’s pretty much not “Mat” until Book 3. He’s almost an entirely different character so of course the fans are laughing about this a bit because it’s very on brand
