According to a box office analyst I follow, Avatar 2 is on track to beat Top Gun: Maverick and No Way Home. I don't have an article to link for it.

In any case, Avatar 2 is projecting to do better this weekend in the US than last week-end (+7% from last weekend at $67.8m this week-end).

Deadline Link

People like Avatar 2 and cultural impact was clearly enough.

I guess I’m really not in their target demographic. I don’t plan to see it and haven’t heard anyone talking about it in real life.

Only 31% of Americans (at the time) saw the first one in Cinema.

It doesn't take many Americans for a movie to gross that highly.

Something like 22% of Americans saw Top Gun: Maverick in Cinema for reference and that did $710 million+ domestically.

If not for COVID in China, Avatar 2 would have been a beast there - early projections were $600m in China alone.

That would have meant a box office gross of close to $2.6 billion if China was fully open.

My 15 year old went to see it and she said it was boring and the story made no sense, and she was excited to see it. I've not heard a more clear indicator that I wouldn't like it.

China has the lowest barometer globally when it comes to movies.

I was in Beijing in the 90s and they were still showing shitty 1970s Kung-Fu movies. They're a massive reason, the massive reason, Hollywood dumbed down their movies...to rake in that dough.

Good.

I hear the movie is about 30-40 minutes too long, but it basically delivers.

China loves big budget, simplistic, flashy, CGI shitfests, amd so does much of the rest of the world like the Middle East, Russia, etc.

Avatar makes most of its money outside the US, so it really doesn't matter if we go see it or not, because there is objectively nothing interesting about.

From someone that never thought we needed another movie, let alone 5-7, I liked Avatar 2 better than Avatar 1. Visually, it’s magnificent. It’s not as breathtaking as Avatar 1 because we are used to quality 3D, but the visuals alone should be enough to get a ticket. The story is a bit less predictable and tries to focus on too many characters, but it’s not Ferngully 3.0.

That's because Avatar does so phenomenally well outside of the US.

Avatar still does pretty damn well in the US - it's projected to gross $600 million in the US. That's pretty fantastic for any film, it's just overshadowed by foreign performance.

This isn’t a shot by any means but it’s almost like the people on this message board don’t represent the large majority

Most if not all my friends have seen it and said it’s worth watching

Put me down as not buying this.

We are about to roll out of holiday viewings and this is not going to suck in repeat views.

It may have massive worldwide, but I do not really consider that a judge of a movies worth.
