Quotes like that are why people are criticizing this movie. It's getting way too much hype for a CGI remake of Ferngully or Dances With Wolves. There's nothing unique or particularly creative about the story. It's been done before, and the CGI looks terrible to me in the trailers. It looks like a cartoon or a PS3 game.
Its quotes like these that make you sound ignorant as hell. There is no way a Youtube trailer can remotely capture the scope of what Avatar is claiming it has achieved. Its something you have to witness first hand.

If this movie does suck the big one, I fear that you might jump off a cliff. I hope you are being sarcastic with your comments.

Please explain what exactly is ignorant about anything that I said. The story is out there, and it's obviously been done before. It's strikingly similar to the movies I mentioned. I have no interest in the CGI or the visual "scope" of the movie. I'm more interested in story, directing, acting, etc. than sitting in front of pretty CGI images for two hours while a subpar story, likely with subpar acting, plays out. I don't know why you get so defensive in every Avatar thread.

Maybe he is an Avatar?
Or tall, skinny Smurf.

Not really. I'm not really excited at all about the premise or the trailers, just the promises we are getting out of it. I can see why people are apprehensive to this film, but if it is saying that the movie is this good (best adventure of all time) and actually believes it (which I think they do), then it should be a great film.
The thing people here don't get is its not WHAT the movie is about, but HOW the movie is about that make it a great film. Its HOW that interests me, and I could really care less WHAT it is right now. Up would be a prime example of this, since an 80 year attaching a ton of balloons to his house to make it float with a cub scout stow away seems like a pretty stupid idea for a film, but it works.

Every single idea has been done before. EVERY SINGLE ONE. Everyone is acting like this movie is a complete rip-off, when it just seems to have a very simple story.
And all I'm saying is that you can't base how good a movie will be off of a trailer. I just about shite my pants when I saw Terminator Salvation trailer, but pretty much they showed every good moment of the movie. Cameron may be smarter than this and not show many of the good parts of the film in the trailer so you'll really enjoy the movie that much more and be surprised by it.

What is CGI?
I've seen this a couple times tonight but not sure what it stands for.

For the people who don't go see movies whose basic idea has been done before, I ask you one thing:
Have you ever been to a movie theater then?

up had a creative premise that actually had a non-common journey (the how)
this movie has been done plenty of times before
and it looks HORRIBLE. i mean the actual look of the movie. it's a cgi-fest that looks like a cartoon

I don't expect CGI to look like reality. I expect to go see a movie and be entertained. How about you people actually see the thing before you dismiss it as awful ?

If you could get a dual screen halo/dances with wolves thing going you'd basically be watching this movie.

Awesome. Obviously, I am never wrong.
See how that works?

Ok, I'll say what I said before, but more concise:
People are claiming this to be some awesome adventure, with an "amazing story," which are your words from a previous thread. That has been proven false. Even if the story has been done before, it's worse, the premise and point have been drilled into people's heads enough.
It looks preachy, end of story.
An awesome adventure has to have a great lead character (Indiana Jones being numero uno) someone that the audience can relate with. This does not seem to be the case AND the hero is going to be an "alien" for lack of a better word, which won't be good. You take the journey with the character, that is the point (think Sam and Frodo).
CGI can be taken to far when it begins to look unreal. For example, I am Legend. Why use CGI characters for something that could be done with humans?? Why waste the time and money on something so stupid.
FWIW, Carpenter's The Thing looks more realistic than Avatar.
Lastly, the ONLY thing this movie has going for it is the 3D tech. It WILL make or break the movie. If it is worth it, then the movie is successful. If it's not as cool as it claims to be, I smell a failure of epic proportions.
And I am never wrong.

That's a pretty big leap of faith right there. Since Terminator Salvation sucked hard (I even feel asleep during it on opening night). It looked shitty and still sucked.

Its a fact. There are plenty of movies with great premises that fall flat on their face and are terrible because the journey sucks. This is the thing trailers are not capable of showing is the journey the characters take. Yeah they show some of the highlights, but you hardly know what got them to that point. It doesn't matter if you have the best premise ever, if you have shitty characters (and you can't really judge characters from the previews since you don't really know what they are all about) and a terrible journey to accompany it, the film sucks. An OK to bad premise can be saved with great characters and a great journey. WHAT is the premise, while HOW is basically the real effort put into the film. Anyone can come up with a decent premise for a film, but its just if you can execute it properly is where the challenge really is.
