So after posting in the recent Tetris movie thread, I commented how much I loved the setting in contested European cities in that 80s era and it made me want to rewatch Atomic Blonde, b/c it's been a few years.

I have always been an unabashed Atomic Blonde defender and this rewatch did nothing to thwart my enthusiasm. It's just a really fun ride that has a good story, pacing, amazing visuals, great action sets etc. I wouldn't classify it as a great movie (if you want that in a relatively new Cold War spy thriller, watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy instead), but it's a great experience.

The soundtrack is also very great. Acting is really done well. I have no idea why this movie wasn't more successful and popular.

Bonus points: this probably has the most accurate (relative to action movie protagonists) depiction of a woman fighting men. Charlize gets her fricking arse kicked in this movie and doesn't overpower grown men all the time. She wins, obviously, but, within action movie logic (and comparable male stars and their fight effectiveness), it's "realistic".

Anytime I can get some Charlize girl on girl action it's a good time.

Same director as Bullet Train for anyone who didn't know.

Also same co-director of the OG John Wick (supposedly he wasn't credited).

Atomic Blonde does everything right except watching a 118lb Theron fight 260lb dudes is beyond unrealistic.

Jason Bourne and James Bond do, too. Within that context, she did fine.

She gets her arse kicked throughout the movie and is only able to win using the environment to her advantage. It's not like she faces up and goes pure hand to hand w/everyone she fights.

Action movies are just unrealistic, they wouldn't be fun if they were documentaries. There is no human that ever lived that could do what John Wick or Robert McCall do onscreen. Suspension of reality is the key to enjoying any of these.

20 + lbs heavier than Charlize Theron.
He had years of martial arts training.

Exactly.

You have to grade this stuff on a curve. Critiquing something like Theron against reality while pretending Jason Bourne wouldn't have 20+ broken bones is just silly.

People are pretending she was Black Widow or something.

Victimhood status and virtue signaling is just so hot right now.
