the fact that we still have these in-depth discussions just shows how complex and deep the underlying story is within this film
simply one of the GOATs
that's why it got a Criterion release

What kind of a nuke were they using?
The most powerful bomb ever, the Tsar Bomba, was so heavy (it used a tertiary thermonuclear stage) the plane that dropped it barely could pull away from the blast to escape it.
But at the end of the day, it only produced 50 megatons of TNT. That’s equivalent to a fireball 8 miles in diameter
In contrast, the Armageddon nuke was powerful to split an asteroid the size of Texas in half and propel each half to a distance wide enough that both halves missed earth by a good distance.

If movies have taught me anything, American hard work will far exceeds the slave labor of the USSR.

I would have loved to have been in the production meeting when someone said “we should put a gun on the armadillo.”
Everyone: “you are are idiot why the frick would you put a mini gun on a space drill there is no one or anything to shoot”
Michael Bay: “You are a genius and let’s make the gun the centerpiece of two scenes and give it a remote control”
Edit: How does Harry not notice the gun early on make them take it off as being worthless.

“Imagine a firecracker in the palm of your hand. Set it off, what happens? You burn your hand, right?
Now, close your fist around the same firecracker and set it off . . . poof.
Your wife's going to be opening your ketchup bottles for the rest of your life."

It was a handwave.
If you really blew an asteroid apart gravity would pull it back together. In real life, Apollo 13 had debris from the explosion following the spacecraft due to gravity, and all of the objects were much smaller.
With an asteroid we would nuke the surface in hopes of altering the trajectory...but then you don't send roughnecks to drill a hole and you don't have a movie.

The premise of this movie is
It is easier to teach oil rig guys to be astronauts than teach astronauts how to drill a hole in a rock.

Armageddon is just awesome in all the right ways. 90% of the plot is convoluted and filled with holes ... and no one cares.
