The show is beyond where Stannis is at in the books. It is just at the lead up to that final battle. Stannis is more sympathetic in the book because you can see better his motivations. And we don't know if he actually kills his daughter yet.

Spoiler alert:

No lady Stoneheart in the show? I thought that was going to be a major player.

Very possible you'll prefer show to the book if that's the case. I do think somethings are better in the book, but the show does a great job of streamlining and improving some boring parts.

Worst twist in the series. Hope she never makes it in.

Seems like I read where Brandon Stark is older than Jon Snow in the books? Anything else like that?

1. Bran is not older than Jon. Bran is like 10-12. Jon is like 14-16.

There are giant heaping mountains of difference starting in Season 2. The first book really only differs from season 1 in that it provides more back story and exposition. Season 2 departs slightly from book 2, and the gap between the show and the books just gets wider and wider. Now, we are all Hodor.

I thought Gendry would have more of a role, books and show. I guess in the show he died at sea in his row boat

That's true - pure Hodors know almost nothing of the ToJ, just as an example.

And a certain pirate who is supposedly going to make an appearance this season.

There are too many plot differences, additions and subtractions, to even begin to list here.

Some I've liked, some .... not so much.

Oh man.. This was my next question. Was Stannis's story arc not the most anticlimactic thing in the series? All of the blood magic, all of the visions in the fire, just to lead to him being dissed by half of his army, getting his arse kicked in one battle, and sitting against a tree while Brienne puts him down. Really? I really thought his would end up being the best storyline. Seemed incredibly truncated and thrown together at the end.

The changes to Stannis is my biggest gripe about the show. I still really like the show but they really screwed up in showing his motivations and the love he had for his daughter.

The biggest omission, size-wise, from the books has been the intrigue with selecting the next Greyjoy king.

Euron, Victarion, and Aeron Greyjoy are three characters that haven't been named in the series yet.

Euron is coming this season, but it looks like there's no Victarion, and he's a POV character.

The other big difference is Young Griff's storyline, which, I'm guessing, we probably won't see in the show.

I'm with you. A lot of people see the iron born as a bunch of bad arse warriors. I see them more as a bunch of bully pirates who beat up on the powerless but get their shite pushed in when they try to take on somebody that matters.

I actually agree with you that it was boring.

As for the Ironborn themselves, though... I hate to disappoint you, but Victarion's POV chapters in Dance with Dragons are some of the best in that book. You want badass? Go and read them again.

The Greyjoys have a bigger role in the story to come than has been revealed thus far. The show has made them a bit of a dud, overall, but things are lining up to involve them more story-wise soon, in both the books and TV.

Try dumbass. I really don't like his POVs because he is by far the dumbest of the POV characters. It's not even close really.

Aside from giving Dany a fleet to sail back to Westeros, I just don't know the direction they can take it. When Dany arrives back in Westeros, LF and Varys should be at full power, with the Others coming from the South, and Jon leading the Resistance. That just seems like way too many plotlines at the end to include the Ironborn.
