Seems like every film is overly criticized at this point. Not just superhero films. The loss is that people are hesitant to just relax and enjoy movies for what they are.

After BvS had its opening weekend, the word was that Warner had to have Batman in every DC movie if they wanted them to make big bucks. Now, after Wonder Woman and Aquaman, they're claiming the opposite.

Yes, DC Films is alive and potentially well due to audiences embracing Aquaman and Wonder Woman. And that means that Batman, be it Ben Affleck’s The Batman or Matt Reeves’ The Batman, is no longer required to save the day.

Thanks for bumping this one. Here's my thoughts from the thread someone started earlier today:
I saw it today, since I had some time to kill in BR.
I thought it was pretty meh. Not bad. But nothing I would really recommend people go out and see in theaters.
Jason Momoa did a pretty good job, but the exposition was pretty heavy, the plot didn't strike me as very original or very sharp, and the action was kind of overly busy.
Mera was indeed pretty hot. But the outfit they had her in didn't make the best use of it.

Saw it in IMAX for the first time tonight. Damn the underwater scenes look amazing.

It was a little long in the middle. Good movie though. I saw it in 4k laser IMax at the Chinese theater, wish we had a screen near that level nearby

I saw it and was really surprised I liked it a lot. To me it was a good fun movie. The kids enjoyed it as well all in all we all had a good time seeing it.

#Aquaman has now smashed $600M intl and $800M global marks! Intl #boxoffice saw $16.8M MON & $24M TUE pushing overseas cume to $606.6M. Worldwide haul now an amazing $822.9M and rising fast. By SUN it shd be at $250M+ domestic & $900M+ global. Final near $1.1 billion likely.

I know there's a lot of Hollywood bullshite, but Cavill seems like a nice guy.

So we only get to do this for DC films but criticize Marvel for the same thing?
I just saw it and liked it for what it was. But there was tons of times I cringed at the acting and the dialogue. The action and graphics were fantastic and the story was good enough but the acting outside of Wilson and Momoa was awful, especially the guy who played Black Manta. Holy shite he was bad.
The humor just fell flat, hard and some of the dramatic slow mo walk ups were laughable. Outside of that it’s probably DC’s second best film outside of WW. They’re headed in the right direction but have a long way to go.

I agree with just about all of this. Saw it this afternoon and nodded off at one point. It was very bland and the acting was horrible at times.
I know my opinion on this is not popular, but as someone that grew up a huge Batman fan and Superman fan to a lesser degree, I liked Man of Steel and the extended version of BvS. I liked both better than this.

Music choice in certain scenes was bad
This, specifically when Manta is making his suit and when Momoa and Heard arrive in Italy. It was like a parody the music was so awful. They could have just had score and those scenes would have been fine. But because the music it was laughable at best

Your hatred of Roy Orbison deserves a thousand downvotes.

#Aquaman finished the wknd a tad bit higher than WB estimated. $31M wknd, still off 41%, $260M domestic #boxoffice cume after 17 days + previews surpassing #CaptainAmerica #WinterSoldier. May end at around $340M beating #SpiderMan #Homecoming, #BvS, #GOTG & #Deadpool2.

Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Aquaman feel an awful lot like Marvel films though

Wonder Woman and Aquaman are the only filmmaker-driven movies (JL was a mishmash of Snyder/Whedon/Warner). The two movies have their own style and tone, and neither had to lean on the shared universe. Shazam looks way broader than Marvel's most comedic films, and Phoenix's Joker should be even further from the Marvel model.
(The first leaked response to the Joker movie is that Phoenix and the script are both amazing. But this is a podcast hearing from a source, so whatever.)

The Joker movie appears to be in completely separate continuity, so I don't expect it to feel like a Marvel film.
Movies like Logan, Days of Future Past, and the Dark Knight don't feel like Marvel movies either, but they're great films in their own right. Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad didn't feel like Marvel films either but they were objectively bad films.
Starting with Wonder Woman though, DC has taken more from Marvel's playbook than they care to admit.
I've actually enjoyed the movies DC has put out since Wonder Woman. Justice League gets crapped on unnecessarily.

Scott Mendelson at Forbes likes to season his box office reports with little obscure ticket sales facts. He sneaked in this little F.U. to Depp in his latest Aquaman update...
quote:
If it can pass $1.066 billion global (Dead Man’s Chest in 2006), it’ll put Amber Heard’s Aquaman ahead of every prior Johnny Depp movie in unadjusted global grosses.
