It's out on Premier Access Disney Plus and in some theaters.

Any thoughts on it?

It’s excellent. I’m undecided if it’s their best movie since Tangled or Hunchback of Notre Dame. It was badass and I think Raya is at worst the third best Disney Princess (certainly behind Belle and again tied as of this moment with Rapunzel).

I mean this actually in a good way, but it felt more like a Dreamworks than a Disney movie. It seems like something the “How to Train Your Dragon” writers would follow up with. The fight scenes were excellent, all the characters were really good, and had a lot of good humor (Awkwafina killed it as the dragon).

But I wouldn’t show this to a kid under 5. The demonic creatures and some of the action I think may be intense for them. There’s the elephant in the room where they clearly got the plot from, but from taking major inspiration from the material they did a damn good job with it. It also ends on a note where you can definitely do a sequel on this unlike forcing it like they did with Frozen.

3.5 out of 4 stars

EDIT: Saw it in theaters, but I live two blocks from an Alamo Drafthouse.

If you’ve got kids 5-12 they’ll enjoy it.

You knew it was going to be excellent reading the reviews when the Woke (these are no longer critics since if Gone with the Wind was released for the first time today would have gotten a 2% RT) spent 3/4 of the review bitching about the casting and being insensitive to Southeast Asians, but reluctantly admitting that it was good while still implying most of the cast and crew were racist for making this film. In this Vox Review 17 out of 28 paragraphs is dedicated to virtue signaling towards the Woke writer being a better person than most of the cast and crew who made this film... also Awkwafina was great in it. Umm, what do you mean? Ten paragraphs ago you called her a racist for taking the role over a SE Asian actress. Does anyone else just feel like Truman at this point where everyone is talking insanity around you that has no context to what is going on around us?

It has a 95% on RT. So you knew it would be excellent based on critical consensus that it's really good? You are deliberately going out of your way to say dumb things. I'm sorry you read 3 reviews you didn't like, but there are 189 others you'd potentially agree with.

Read the reviews, like the one I posted. I’ve never read reviews like them. It’s 75% virtue signaling to their readers, the cast, and crew that I am better than all of you sitting here as I’m writing in my studio apartment. I care more about Southeast Asians and all minorities more than you do, even if you made an entire movie celebrating their culture and the only thing I’ve done to help SE Asians is order Thai food at that steamy place down the street. And then they spend like 4 paragraphs talking about the movie and grit through their teeth having to admit the film is actually good. I don’t think I’ve made as unhinged of a review as these people... and that’s really saying something.

I downloaded it last night. We’re going to watch it Sunday when the wife and kids get back into town.

We thought it was great. Multiple family members over multiple ages all agreed. $30 seems large but cheaper than going to theater and we made an experience out of it for a movie night. One kid even colored and cut out “tickets” for everyone.

Plus I believe we now get it through June. I want to say other buy early options were only for 72 hours or something.

I was told it was a racist film in regards to casting so I won’t be watching.

Yeah $30 for unlimited access is a great deal for families, but for me, it’s not. Only two theaters in Charleston are showing it and one is a hood theater and the other one is way out in West Ashley.

Might see if it’s on any torrents when I get home.

I have one 5 yo and one 5mo old she can wait a month or two. If I had several kids close in age it would be a no brained but my 5yo is content with never ending wild Kratz so she’ll be ok

Yeah if you just have a 5 year old, wait. If 7 and up get it today.
