Agreed. Really you don’t have to change a line in OotP to make this work. HBP starts off the same way where Luna does the commentary for Quidditch which makes Harry laugh, and then he still asks her to Slughorn’s ball. It’s at Slughorn’s ball where he realizes he’s actually attracted to her and finds her truly enduring. She and Harry start dating and that puzzles the entire school. Harry breaks up with her at the end of the book to go seek Horcruxes.

In DH they meet back up again at Bill and Fleur’s wedding where they kiss. Snape reluctantly tells Voldemort that Harry and Luna dated, which Voldemort then abducts her from Hogwarts and sends a message over the waves that he will let her go if Harry turns himself over. Malfoy Manor goes the same, but now Luna joins in the Horcrux mission. She goes with them to Gringotts and destroys Racenclaw’s Diadem. You really don’t have to change much of the story at all for this to work. Harry and Ginny had no chemistry at all, while I think Harry and Luna’s is a bit undeniable.
