Marvel.com broke the news just moments ago, but not only do they have a director, one of the previous people mentioned as a possibility to direct, Anchorman co-writer and director Adam McKay, has been hired to "contribute" to the existing script by Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish, presumably to get it into shape to start production next month as planned.

As a reminder, Reed was once going to be directing Fox's Fantastic Four movie back in 2002 before Tim Story came on board, so he clearly has had interest in tackling superheroes for a while. McKay has been developing a movie based on Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson's edgy superhero comic, The Boys. They've both been the men behind the lens for a number of comedies that have grossed over $100 million domestically.

While just about everyone is disappointed in Edgar Wright's sudden departure a few weeks back, does this pairing of director and writer give you any more hope that Ant-Man will join Iron Man, Thor and the Captain America in the pantheon of great movies based on Marvel Comics?

Ant-Man is still scheduled for release on July 17, 2015

Yeah, you go from Edgar Wright who has directed 3 of the 10 best comedies of the century, then to McKay who makes plenty of quotable and memorable comedies, to the director of "The Break-Up". Talk about a downward spiral.

I used to be all against letting an unaccomplished director in film helm a tent pole movie. I am still hesitant but...

know what they directed next?

They did Arrested Development (largely agreed upon to be the best comedy series of all time) and Community, to where these guys deserve the benefit of the doubt.

What the hell has Peyton Reed done? Mediocrity to the highest degree?

BFD they did some comedic TV.

That doesn't mean anything when it comes to directing a massive spy thriller action film filled with tons of green screen.

I just don't see any reason to automatically assume this is going to ruin the movie. I say this as somebody who was sad Edgar Wright left the film.

I'm a big AD fan but get outta here with that noise.

In no way is it "largely agreed upon as the best comedy series of all time".

What's been better? Seinfeld? It's the only one coming to mind.

top 5 off the top of my head for me personally?

Seinfeld
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Cosby Show
All In the Family
I Love Lucy

I'm sure plenty of people would also argue shows like Friends, Cheers, Mary Tyler Moore, The Simpsons, South Park, Andy Griffith Show, The Honeymooners, Roseanne, Dick Van Dyke Show, Modern Family, Bob Newhart Show, Taxi, Frasier,
The Office, and probably many others as the top comedy.

I didn't even touch on British shows (or versions of)

I'd put Arrested Development in the same category as Seinfeld and All in the Family. I really don't think the other 3 you listed are on the same level.

Fortunately you and I agree that none of these are really even close.

That's rich.

Just watch GotG make more money than Superman. It could happen, if so, even one bad Ant-Man film will be a blip on the radar for Marvel.

I actually dislike McKay's involvement more than Reed's.

I'll say the same thing I said when Wright left over "creative differences," until Marvel ACTUALLY messes up, there's no reason to predict this being a terrible film. They've been good at putting pieces into play so far. (Iron Man 2 having pretty much all of the right pieces...execution was poor admittedly).

Like the Derrickson choice, I wouldn't celebrate it, but I also wouldn't immediately trash it either.

This is the production company that put Captain America in the hands of TV sitcom directors. You never know what could happen.

They handed over Iron Man to Shane Black. I'd say that ended up being a poor choice.

Probably, but the film still grossed more than anything but Avengers, and it hasn't really killed the Iron Man love.

McKay's name is being added as a band-aid to go with their naming of an unknown director.

Hopefully that will be the extent of his contributions. This movie doesn't need Anchor Man humor.

I could have written and directed Iron Man 3 to box office success. Doesn't make it a good choice.
